2006 owners_does your 48RE do this?
Mine shifts perfectly as well and goes between P-R-N-D without any banging.
No mods to the tranny or motor and have about 10k miles so far with about 5000 of that towing a 10k+ lbs trailer.

06 tranny
My 06 3500 is great - with no load. However as soon as I hook up my 5th wheel it's like the tranny turns into something else. The gear changes become really hard to the point they literally thud from gear to gear. When I put it into tow haul - man if I false teeth, they'd fall out, the change is so harsh.
When I go into the dealer for the first oil change I'm going to find out more about this. If anyone has some idea's about the cause I'd sure like to hear them so I can talk intelligently to the dealer, without blowing my stack.

48re transmission
I know this said 2006 shifting problems but my 2004.5 sounds similar issues
Hi everyone, I am new to dodge trucks but not new to repair work, I just purchased a new to me/ used 2004 dodge 3500 diesel dually with the 48re trans and it was doing this delayed shifting every shift with only 39k miles, I performed a transmission service, replacing the filter and fluid with dodge supplied parts and even removed the cooler lines from the transmission to get more of the old fluid out (be careful there is an o ring that may drop out, dont lose it ! ) The other thing I did was adjust the transmission bands on the outside of the case and the one above the in pan filter to factory specs and this helped out tremendously! I was experiencing this shift delay over 90% of the time and doing the service and adjusting the bands helped out a lot!
Unfortunately the trans occasionaly still acts up, but nowhere near as often, the park to reverse harsh shifting seems to be gone completely but it will still do the delayed shifting while driving easy on the pedal. I have noticed that shutting off the truck and restarting makes it go back to smooth shifting so I THINK maybe some of the old fluid or maybe a valvebody or solonoid sticking issue is causing the problem. I am sure there are more experienced transmission gurus on here that know exactly what is going on in these transmissions and know the fix but I am not one of them! Sorry I can't give a complete fix but doing the trans service and band adjustment DID help !
Good luck everyone!
