2006 CTD Hanging RPM
2006 CTD Hanging RPM
Hey guys I'm new to the forum and new to the CTD world. I recently purchased a 2006 CTD quad cab with just over 100k on the clock. Truck seems to run great but the other day I noticed a possible problem. After starting the truck I realized I left something in the house, as I was getting out I accidentally hit the accelerator and it reved up to 3k and it held there for about 10secs then slowly came down to 2500, with a slight surge and then to 2k and so on back to idle. The entire hanging rpm lasted I would say 20secs or so. So I was like what the hell so I reved it again and it did the same thing...Is this normal? I wasn't sure if it was a engine protection program. Any ideas? Thanks in advance guys!

Sounds like injectors could be leaking. Might want to try some injector cleaner and take truck on a good run afterwards.

It could be injectors, it could be the FCA, it could be rail pressure sensor, it could be the ECU, it could be normal.
Rpm's do not drop instantly on these trucks due to rail pressure needing to be bleed off slowly to minimize spikes. Twenty seconds back to idle is a bit long though, 10 seconds or under with a smooth ramp down would be closer to normal.
Trying to find inector(s) that are possible hanging and letting too much fuel thru is tough. There is no good test for it that is exact. A cylinder contribution test with a scan tool will tell you if 1 or 2 are possible letting too much fuel thru.
Might try running sveral tanks with a mixture of Power Service and 2 stroke oil thru it and if possible spend a day towing around as heavy a trailer as you can hook too. These engines do lots of things that don't seem right when they don't get worked hard enough. Sometimes extend higher EGT's cleans the soot and carbon out and they are a different animal.
