2006 ctd 2500 steering rattle
Mine does this just like you described. If you do a search I think TexasCTD just went trough the same stuff with his. He ended up with a steering box brace and some REAL trackbar bushings to solve it for him. After some testing on my truck, I can thelp but agree with all the suspension guys that 99% of all handling, noise, and shaking issues stem from the stock track bar!
I know this is a very old thread but, has anyone figured out for sure what causes this feeling in the steering column/pedals?
I have been having this problem almost since i bought the truck brand new, and it's driving me nuts.
Now to make things worse i have a popping in my steering while turning back and forth. It will pop 3-4 times while turning the wheel back and forth. (stopped in the driveway) Also just today I noticed the same sound while turning around in a parking lot so I guess I'm having the same sound while moving too.
I had a popping sound coming from the track bar a couple of years ago (bolt was loose and popping over a bolt thread) so I tightened it so tight with a break down bar that I actually snapped the bolt. I have new grade 8 bolts in the track bar drop bracket and the track bar it self which by the way is a pro-comp adjustable track bar not the stock one so I don't think the track bar is the problem. (I recently tightened again just in case)
Also I recently just got rid of the superlift front coils, superlift control arms, and the stock steering (tie rods, drag link, etc...) and replaced with Don Thuren's 6" coils, Pro Comp's long arm kit, (recommended from Don) and the new 08 style steering that Don sent me. I had Rock & Roll Offroad here in Ft Worth put all this on for me. The popping sound I am referring to was present at this time so I had them check for play in the ball joints. They said that the ball joints are fine for a little while at least, and that they didn't know what the sound was but not to worry about it for now!
I guess I actually have two questions here.
1. What is the feeling in the steering column/pedals that a lot of us have been annoyed with for years?
2. Any ideas on the popping sound in the steering that I am having now.
I assume that it could all be just a bad steering gear/box, or even the steering shaft but I'm not sure?????
P.S. I also have a PSC steering brace that I have had on the truck for the past couple of years.
IF ANYBODY HAS GONE THROUGH THE SAME THING OR JUST KNOWS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT, ANY OPINIONS OR SUGGESTIONS THAT YOU GUYS HAVE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
Thanks,
Josh
