2006 Crankshaft Positioning Sensor
Hi, been awhile since I've been here. My 2006 has been a tank with no repairs other than the ball joints in 120K! 
Appreciate any help you guys can give me. Here is my problem:
Where is the crankcase positioning sensor located on the 2006 5.9? My tachometer is erratic so I'm sure that sensor is going bad. Or is the camshaft positioning sensor? I remember replacing the sensor on second generation on my 2001 and having to remove the starter. Now with messed up shoulders and neck (getting older ain't easy!) I'm going to have to have my son help me if I can locate the sensor.
I'm not sure if I need an a scope for adjusting the sensor. I do have a digital volt meter to check voltage. I"m going to have to borrow a manual to make sure.

If your CEL is not on and logging CPS DTC's then your CPS is fine and your in-dash tach issues are because of a faulty cluster.
This is very common for 2006 Dodge Cummins. There are several DIY fixes or you can replace the cluster.
Do a search for 2006 tachometer or dash cluster issues for more details.

No DTCs and the tachometer is flaky.
Same thing on my 2000 and then one day it wouldn't start.
But you are right about the instrument cluster. I found those repair videos you mentioned.

Just out of curiosity, where is the crankshaft positioning sensor? I know where the camshaft positionong sensor is.

99% sure it is your tach and not any sensor! When the tach is fluctuating is the engine also fluctuating? If not then I will say 100% sure it is the tach issue
It's mounted to a cast-in boss and the sensor points right at the tone ring behind the damper.
