2005 Auto Tranny to Manual conversion

2005 Auto Tranny to Manual conversion

Anyone out there know if a computer change is necessary to switch from a Auto to a Manual in an 05 3500 4x4???

Truck has 200,000 miles on it and been through several trannies. I tow heavy all the time. I was grossed at 36,500 lbs last time I weighed at flying J's.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think trading your truck in for a dodge with a manual tran's would be alot cheaper. IMO.

Yep, you need to change columns, Tcase, ECM, Harness(engine), driveshafts, etc. Youll also need the pedal assembly and hydraulics.

Its much easier to have either a donor truck, or one that you are swapping straight across on.
Also with the harness/ecm, it has to be the same year truck.


There was a thread about this on cumminsforum, and two members on there swapped trannies, and I PMd the two that did it for a little more info when I was considering it. Its really only worth messing with if you have another truck to swap it all with as it will be too much of a pain tracking down all the parts seperatly.
Im going to live with my auto for a while, and maybe ill mess with it later, but more than likely ill just get another truck with a 6spd, deffinantly easier

You might want to step up to a F650 or F750. 36K LBS is KILLING that truck

But yes to your question. I have done the swap, and it is tme consuming, but as long as you have a donor truck, or a truck that is swapping you straight up, then it is a straight forward swap.

Too bad yours is an 05, or we could do the swap. I am out of Houston, and I have done the swap, and is not that bad (as you said, if you have a donor truck). Mine is pretty cool in that I have a seperate harness and ECM for the tranny and motor.

Thanks for all of the info... I quess I will just invest the 8 k in the DTT trans. I have already done it with my 01, I was just looking for a more cost effective solution if possible. And as for the Ford thing, not only NO but HeII no.

The truck dont have an issue carrying it, The motor dont have an issue, As with all dodges, the trans is the only issue. My 01 has almost 500,000 on it carrying more weight than this one without any issues (Except the trannie)

For that weight, a MDT is the way to go.

But I agree with you that it's more economical to put in a built auto than try to do a swap. If you swap, you'll have to put in an expensive aftermarket clutch anyway.

I don't think a built DTT will cost $8K. I'm getting one in for $4200 including flexplate, but I'm not getting upgraded shafts. With upgraded shafts that may add another $1500-$2000.

Typically its $7-750/shaft, so input, intermediate, and output would be in the $2100 range, some get by with a stock intermediate, or output, by why risk it if you have the transmission out?
