Gen 1 Auto to Manual conversion parts
Gen 1 Auto to Manual conversion parts
Hey all! I am in the process of pulling together the parts to convert my truck to a NV4500, but there's a bit of an issue around where I live - no junkyards! If anyone knows of some reputable places where I could get the parts for this conversion, please let me know - I don't exactly have the $$$ to buy all new parts for the conversion, unfortunately, so I'm gonna have to get most of it used. I guess I could also get a wrecked donor truck, but there aren't any available around here either. I guess I'm just gonna start collecting parts until I have everything I need, so if anyone has some of them, that'd help too.
Also, if anyone has done this conversion and has a words of wisdom, I'm all ears. I've done conversions in Jeeps before, but not a Dodge...
A few specs on what I'm doing:
CURRENT SETUP:
518 Auto, 170,000 miles
NP205 t-case
FUTURE SETUP:
NV4500 HD
NP205 (hopefully), with 29 spline input, not 23...
So I guess I have to come up with a transmission, t-case, flywheel, bell housing, complete hyd clutch system, and drivelines, as well as cutting the hole in the floor of the truck...

I couldn't find much very detailed in the threads over there - lots of talk, but not much technical. Please enlighten me about the 6 speed (model #'s etc) - I had only considered the NV4500 until now, but I haven't bought anything yet, so I can still change my plans at this stage of the game.
I have some of the things you will need. I parted out a 93 dually CTD with a 5 SPEED. I sold the transmission, clutch & pressure plate & flywheel, but I have everything else: such as trans to engine adapter, clutch pedal & slave cylinder
You need parts from a 94 and up, the 93 with the getrag has a diferent bellhousing adaptor, starter. My cummins originlay had an auto, I just colected all the parts for a 94-98, no problems. you will need a clutch ( I used a hays unit), flywheel, throw out bearing, pilot bearing, engine adaptor, starter, clutch fork, hydro system, clutch peddle . As for the t-case expect to pay 5-600 bucks for one, if yours is still good you could change the input to the 29 spline , but you will have to have the case machined to accept the larger input bearing. I dont know about the differance in length of the trannys ,so I dont know if you drive shafts will work or not. One more thing, CHANGE YOU REAR MAIN WHILE YOUR TRANS IS OUT!!!! I did not , I had to pull the tranny back out two days later , it just started gushing.
I just called around the denver area and got the best prices and then had them ship me the parts I did not already have, it might be worth a trip th the area though, I would gess shiping the 200# trans and the 150# t- case would not be cheap!
