2004 smoke ,

Hey all, I had a no start issue on my 2004 , had no rail pressure , discovered the second injector was bad , replaced it , rail pressure is great runs smooth , but smokes like hell, when I rave it up , figured must be another injector going south , so started capping at the rail one at a time to see which one it may be , does really seem to matter which one is capped ( one at a time ) it does not change the smoking issue ? so is it possible that I have more then just one bad injector ? thanks

Exhaust smell like fuel, or fuel/oil mix? If fuel/oil, you may have a scored cylinder.

butch2000:

Just because the injector may be "firing" does NOT mean that the injector is functioning with the proper pressures etc. At about 100,000 miles, my 2006 Dodge CTD CR began starting hard and smoking when it did start. With the past performance of these CR Injectors, I KNEW I had injector issues. I pulled ALL of mine and sent them to Scheid Diesel to be checked. Two of the injectors were way low on pressure, one had a bad solenoid.

I would recommend that you go ahead and pull ALL of the injectors and send them to a shop of your choice that can thoroughly check all of them on a Bosch Test Stand. FWIW,....there are not alot of shops right now that have that capability. Until you do that,....IMHO,...you are just guessing as to what is really going on with the injectors.

Hopefully you'll be OK after getting the water out but it sure is hard on components.

If you had water in your fuel and you had the smoke as you said, then that means that the water has in fact gone through your injectors! I can tell you that the CR injectors do NOT handle water going through them very well at all. I suggest pulling and flushing not only your fuel tank, but also the fuel lines, injector lines and fuel rail. If you don't want to do that, then make sure you add some good quality diesel fuel additive like "Stanadyne, Power Service, or Lucas" to name a few. FWIW,.....I had fuel get into my 1996 Dodge CTD 12 valve. I did EXACTLY as I just told you and still had two injectors affected by that water. And the Cummins 12 valve engine has mechanical injectors which are usually more tolerant to water than these Bosch CR Injectors!

I wish you good luck Sir. Your going to need it.

One way of draining the tank (if an in in tank pump) is route a longer hose from the filter bowl into a 5 gallon container. Bump the key and the pump will stay kicked in. Run it till your tank is drained, then it'll be easier to drop and clean.

ok , here's the skinny , pulled the tank after pumping it out , I was amazed at how much stuff was still in the tank even after pumping it out ! some water in the fuel , and some still in tank after pumping ! so glad I pulled the tank . made sure tank was clean and dry then re-installed , poured 5 gallons fresh diesel in tank , removed the feedline at the filter housing ,cycled pump couple of times to make sure line was flushed , removed filter cleaned out the crap in bottom of filter , plced to new filter in , removed feed bango at the cp3 , cycled pump again to be sure to bad fuel , replaced line , removed prv , cranked engine over flushing the common rail as well , replaced it , removed the return line , started the truck and let in drain into a container , turned truck off , installed return line , started truck , it smoked for about 8 min , drove truck still smoked for about 8 miles , then cleared , runs great now !!! wow what a headache bad fuel can create !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's great news! Hopefully you won't have any long term damage from this incident. Any idea where the bad fuel came from?
