2004 Ram 4.10 axle ratio
2004 Ram 4.10 axle ratio
I have a dilemma. I think I found the perfect truck. 2004 QC SB 4x4, loaded, Leather, DVD, super low miles, like 6,000. My problem is I don't want, or need 4.10 gears. I tow a trailer that weighs, at most 4000 lbs. I want the 3.73's. I wan't the best fuel economy that I can get.
Any idea what it would cost to have it changed to 3.73's?
It has 285/70/17 tires on it now, so that should help a little, I think. If I changed to 315 size tires, would that get me down to 3.73's.
My problem is I really want the truck. Just not the 4.10's. Help. What do you guys think. Thanks. Grizzly

The people with 4.10 autos love them with the higher OD of the auto. I test drove a 3.73 auto before I found my 03 6sp 4.10 and didn't like the big jump in to OD at all. A little taller tires should fix anything on a 4.10 auto. I'm getting 21+ commuting and 22+ @65 on the hiway with my 03. Craig

I say buy it. I was in the same situation when I found my truck, it was what I wanted except for the 4.10 axles. Doing some research on this site, I found that the difference in mileage compared to 3.73 was only about 1 mpg. I bought it and do not regret it. I get over 18 mpg for normal driving and over 21 mpg on flat highway doing 65 mph, thats right at 2000 rpm. This is with 265 tires. With 285s you may do better. You may pass on it if you do a lot of highway cruising at 75 mph or something as you will be over 2000 rpm and your mileage will drop.
Well, I have 4.10s 6 speed and get on average, over 18 tanks of fuel, 17.1 mpg with a high of 18.9 and a low of 15.9. When I went up to 35 inch tires I just incressed my speed at the same given RPM. I drive at about 2200 RPMs at 73. Before it was 2200 rpms at 68 or 69. If you continue to run what you are now I would say yes.
If you are running 70, put on 315s and then run 70 with a corrected speedo I would bet you MPG goes up.

My '03 6spd has 4.10's and 35" tires. I got the 4.10's because I knew 35's were going on it and I still wanted to be able to tow. with the 35's on mine the ratio is real close to what it would be with the 3.73's and stock tires. It loves to cruise between 45-60 in 6th gear but if I run over 65 the mileage drops.
I suggest using the link attached to look at this clever gear speed calculator and see what the difference is between a 6spd 3:73 and Auto 4:10 as well as the other trannys with different rear ends. You can also play with tire size as well. I found this calculator on Klenger's website.
