I am looking at buying my wife a 2004 Ram2500 with the Cummins engine and automatic transmission. How can I tell if it has the 48RE. I don't remember what year Dodge switched.

Any issues I should know about this year?

 

Mid 04 they went to the 325\610 motor. Most claim that the newer engines don't get the mpg that the others due. If it was built in the first part of the build year it will be a 305\555 engine. You can look on top of the valve cover and there will be a tag that says 305 or 325.

 

It's the last year that has the transfer pump outside the tank. They fail less often when in the tank. I know. Mine failed last week while just putting down the street....pfffft!
