13 Quarts?

When I have changed my own oil I put in 3 gal of Delo and it only comes up to the lowest 25% of the crosshatches on my dipstick. I usually add 3/4 of a quart from a single bottle to get it full to the top of the xxxxx. Has anyone else had this issue? Should I just put in 12 qts and leave well enough alone?
Does that make sense?

Thanks

Mine takes 12 qts. to fill it to the top including filter. After running the engine and checking for leaks, I have to leave it sit for 15-20 minutes to let the oil drain down into the pan or else it reads lower than it actually is.

It takes a while for all the oil to settle down for an accurate reading. I pour in three gallons and not even think twice about it.

Stbentoak is right... I service about 30 or so 3rd gens and I have 2 of them that need 13 to show full.(after started and settled)(regular sized filter).. I don't know why but I just stick it in there so I don't get the phone call.

Mine would read a quart low if it had been running any time recently, if it had set for at least 12 hours it reads normal. I think it's hiding it from me somewhere, trying to bait me into overfeeding it.

The thing that tipped me off on this was I got a first free oil change at the dealer which I let them do.... when I got home and checked it,it was at the bottom of the crosshatches. I took it back and grouched at them that they didn't know what full was ! They swore they put 12 quarts in it,and I'll bet they actually did!
The 1st time I changed it myself it came up low with 12 and I thought I must be crazy...(Not to mention that it is hard to get single quarts of Delo around here)....
Now I just plan on 12-13 quarts to get where I need to be. And according to oil guy I must not be the only one......

Thanks for the info

12 or 13???

04 3500 HO 6 speed

i have always been puzzled by this also.. mine takes 3 gallons plus a little more to read FULL. i just changed over to AMSOIL.. and with the new filter "donaldson" ELF-7349 it read over full after 3 gallons and new filter????? the new filter is interesting. it has "spun" webbing inside with synthectic fibers to filter better.. i believe this new technology filter absorbs more oil??? or at least holds more?? so back on the lift and guessed as i cracked the plug and drained some out. then it said FULL? ok went home.. next morning read... 1/2 quart LOW?? go figure?? so at this point i would say i need 12 1/2 quarts to read full. i bet some trucks just are differn't...

ps: if i'm not mistaken...my manual says 11.5 us quarts??????? NOT

13 Here

Well at least I'm not alone, mine is one that takes 13 quarts. Running a straipore filter I fill it with 13 quarts of rotella and it's on the full mark. Maybe it's something with the dipstick length or something??? 13 for me.

I compared the dipstick lenth with the one on my truck and they are the same... But their truck definately takes 13 and my truck is 12 all of the 13's I have found are 04's >>> I find that a lot on other vehicles also... not just CTD's.
I use a digital metered gun so I know I didnt lose count with qts. >> That is the only way to go! hahaha
