I pour in 3 gallons and call it a day. Don't even check the level.

I recently did the first oil/filter change on my rig and was surprised to find the same thing. Level and settled, 12 quarts put me about halfway up the hatched (safe) area of the dipstick. Maybe it's a 2WD thing because they sit lower in the front. Anyway, the book says not to add oil unless it's below the hatched area, so I didn't top it off. Besides, I haven't seen 15W-40 in quarts.

13 here also, I called the dealer and the service manager told me that 12 is the crankcase capacity and the 13th fills the filter and I fill my filter before I put on. Mine has taken 13 to get to the full line since day one.....

Doesn't that seem kind a odd that some engines are off by a QUART?
Wonder what Cummins thinks about that? Where could that extra quart be going .... Dipstick issue ? Would that cause the dealer to deny a warranty claim?......

I dont think the engines are actually off by a quart.
The dipstick is like a dyno, it might not be totally accurate as to the hp of a vehicle but it is a good place to get a bottom line of sorts.

If you are on level ground and install the required amount of oil remember that mark on the dipstick as a "true" point.

You guys are putting one in the filter aren't you? I was always told to put one in the filter, and I know my diesel tech always fills the filter before installing them and he has been our cummins tech since we started selling them in 89'

Mine has been 12 on the money every time until I put a leveling kit on . It takes 12.5 to bring it half way between the marks now .
