100K maintenance questions

Hi to everyone,

I just rolled 100K last week, and was looking for pointers on things I need to address on my engine. The trucks description is in my signature, and is bone-stock! I've started a list based on the issues others have had on this site. All parts will be genuine Cummins part numbers.

1) new water pump and thermostat
2) new serpentine belt and tensioner
3) new #4 fuel injector line, part#5289447
4) new batteries

I still need the part numbers for the factory belt and the Cummins part number for the #22 wire assembly, high idle function enable.

If anyone has other ideas or recommendations, I'm all ears! I also plan to take my truck to the local Cummins shop and check the injectors and fuel system. Maybe lash the valves? Thanks to all who participate.
Chad

Service your diff`s, trany all fluid, adjust clutches and filter, change anti freeze change power steering fluid, brake fluid, check serp belt if starting to check or crack replace. I have 148k and the belt is still good, and why the water pump, if it isnt weeping.

I use my truck for hunting trips that are thousands of miles round trip. I don't want to be on the side of the road stranded, if I can help prevent it! I did the rest of the fluids already and was looking for advice on the others. If anyone can help on the part numbers needed for the belt and high idle wire would be a great help.
Thanks!

Valve lash every 100k.

I'd give you the belt number if I could, the only one I've replaced so far is the one on my '08 when I put the engine driven compressor it in.

I did the same with my kid's '04 with the 3.7L V6 .... it hit 100k a few months back so it got the water pump, thermostat, and belt. Granted it was weeping, but he's put almost 40k miles on it since we've gotten it and for a first truck/beater vehicle, it's been a nice little rig for him.

I follow the owner's manual for guidance. So I'd recommend what it says. It'll also depend on what regular items are due.

I wouldn't change out any of these items in mid-cycle just for the sake of hitting 100k: fuel filter, oil/filter, tranny fluid/filter, tcase oil or diff oils. Those are already on a running schedule and they would stay there.

The real out of the norm things that I'd get done @ 100k are:
- serpentine belt
- flush engine coolant
- valve lash
- check your e-brake cable

The outliers I'd consider if they haven't been done in 60-100k:
- hub bearings (or anything front end)
- brakes (full service - pads, rotors, calipers hoses, fluid flush)

Of course, check the rest of the truck and if you've got any concerns go ahead an address them.

Sounds like good advice, but what's with the e-brake cable?
And does anyone have the part# for the high idle wire?

The Cummins ECM pigtail is Cummins p/n 3824810.

Are you familiar with installing this pigtail directly into pin 22 on the ECM mounted on the side of the engine?

You will also have to get the firmware option (PTO speed control) enabled in the ECM from either the dealer or from an aftermarket programmer.

There is a ton of info on this, do a search on "high idle".

Parking brake. Make sure it's working, that it isn't frozen and it is tensioned right.

Usually when PBs aren't normally used, they rust in place and break off when the user eventually tries it again. In states where a vehicle has annual inspections, this can hinder passing.

It isn't a huge deal, just one of those that gets lost in maintenance and only matters when it's needed

I do regular maintenance on the fluids, but the parts, if not broken, leave them alone.

I had the P1740 on my truck. After searching, many folks get that code when their trans is failing (something related to TC lockup). Anyway, mine was also running perfectly when the code got set. I have a cheap OBD reader that, for some reason, would not reset that code. So, it was stuck in there (again, shifted perfectly for over a year after throwing that code). Coincidentally, my code was set when my batteries were failing. I'm told that failing batteries can cause all kinds of strange electrical stuff - maybe even throwing a false code? Anyway, batteries replaced. A few months ago, dealer installed a retro fit tank mounted lift pump. In that process, they cleared my codes and the 1740 was gone and hasn't returned.

If it were me and my trans was working fine, then I would get the code cleared and see if it returns. If it returns, then there's likely a problem and I would have it checked out.
