Is the 06 tranny durable?

Boss considering megacab ctd but not sure about the tranny and tc. I have seen some post on this site and there seems to be as many cons as pros on this truck. Is there a consistent problem with them? Should I tell him to wait on the new tranny and ctd for 07? TIA

I haven't towed more than 8k. No problems. Seems like the 07's are going to have twice the electronics of the 06'. That'll be impressive. They did change the ratio's of the G56 for the 07' CTD. Depending on configuration the G56 will be a little more highway friendly.

Mine is geared perfect for towing. Not as great for driving empty. Mileage on my Mega is 17-18mpg.

Thanks for the input. He is really leaning Dodge but the tranny issues of the past weigh heavy. He would like to chip it right off the bat.

Your talking about automatic transmission right? They are fine. The 48RE is a tough, durable transmission as long as you are running stock power or maybe up to a 100 extra hp. An aftermarket torque converter and valve body would make it really put the power to the ground.

The G56 6 speed manual tranny is turning out to be a great transmission too. It is geared a little to low for empty highway cruising causing the Cummins to turn alot of rpms. For towing, it is a beast.

The Auto 48RE with a 3.73 gear is great for highway cruising. It is ok for pulling too, but not a stump puller off the line with a heavy load. It probably turns about 300-400 less rpms at highway speed than the G56 which will help fuel economy.

By far the most common problem we see with these trucks is how the bombs take so much green stuff from your wallet and turn it into black stuff out the exhaust... but what the heck - SOOT HAPPENS
