05 Parking Break Adj

How do you adjust the parking break on these trucks? My buddy has an 05 and you have to shove the peddle to the floor and even then it will roll on an incline.

I'm interested in this also. Mine was noticably more loose a few months ago. It was like it happened over night. Anyway, I have to push it down pretty close to the floor now days to get it to hold the truck on a hill. So I'm interested in knowing if the adjustment wheel exists and works, or if you have to have a special tool and do the whole cable tensioner loosen adjustment procedure.

The '06 manual says that it shouldn't need to be adjusted but then goes on to give 2 methods. One for adjustment disassembled, the other is below:

Adjustment can be made with a standard brake gauge
or with adjusting tool. Adjustment is performed with
the complete brake assembly installed on the backing
plate.
1. Be sure parking brake lever is fully released.
2. Raise vehicle so rear wheels can be rotated freely.
3. Remove plug from each access hole in brake support
plates.
4. Loosen parking brake cable adjustment nut until
there is slack in front cable.
5. Insert adjusting tool (4) through support plate
access hole (1) and engage tool in teeth of adjusting
screw star wheel (2).
6. Rotate adjuster screw star wheel (move tool handle
upward) until slight drag can be felt when wheel is
rotated.
7. Push and hold adjuster lever away from star wheel with thin screwdriver (3).
8. Back off adjuster screw star wheel until brake drag is eliminated.
9. Repeat adjustment at opposite wheel. Be sure adjustment is equal at both wheels.
10. Install support plate access hole plugs.
11. Adjust parking brake cable and lower vehicle.
12. Depress park brake pedal and make sure park brakes hold the vehicle stationary.
13. Release park brake pedal.

On review of the instruction, it appears to be copied from directions for standard drum brakes. The diagram shows no "adjuster lever" as these don't appear to be self adjusting. Other than that the instructions should work.

From: alberta,
on these trucks is nearly impossible to adjust the right side park brake with out removing the hub assembly, due to the adjuster being at the top and the springs are about 4" away from it and u cant move the adjuster. is is impossible to put a screw driver in to turn it. if u have a better idea i like to know what u got.

I've never adjusted mine so can't say for certain. However, I do have a brake adjuster spoon that is only about 4 1/2 inches long that would work within the space you indicate. My RV brakes have a similar limitation and I can just manage doing those.

This might be a long shot, but try backing up (slowly) and engaging your e-brake on and off. With the star wheel adjuster, it sounds similar to old drum brakes that would automatically adjust the brakes by the reversed torque when applied in reverse. I have never had to adjust my brake so I have never tried this. If anyone does, post the results.

I'll try it tonight and let you know. I never got it to work on any of my old stuff, so who knows if I'll do it right, but I'll try.

* side note: I'm posting this on the site from my phone. hehe technology is cool!
