But he said it was 2" over full.... That's got to be more than a half a quart....

A few times I have noticed an increase in the reading on the dipstick and determined it was because some oil apparently gets trapped in the tube or on the stick. If I look at the other side of the dipstick the reading is between the bars and normal !!! So I assume the oil has not fully drained into the pan and some must get trapped up in the tube. Don't know for sure but all I can tell you is to look at both side of the dipstick. If I let it set for a while I get an accurate reading on both sides of the stick. Hope this helps you.

when my oil filter is half low,,, the dipstick is right 1.5 inches past normal. Put me into panic mode when i first seen it.

What some of you guys are not realizing is that the CUMMINS (please spell it right) is a long block with a long pan front to back. If you park on any slight incline/decline you will see differences in dipstick readings. Slight differences.

I agree, my dipstick shows 2 different readings on front or back and is SERIOUSLY SENSITIVE to level. My 2002 cummins is NOT like this. The 2007 5.9 is the most sensitive dipstick I have ever had the pleasure of reading. LOL

My oil is black 5 minutes after an oil change. The oil is doing it's job of keeping soot suspended and not clumping. I guess I can remember when my truck was new to me and I too worried about the "black oil" syndrome... but trust us, all is well.
