05 CTD with increasing oil level on dipstick

I was wondering if anyone has had the problem of checking there oil only to notice that there was a slight increase in the level. I am not sure what is going on and I think I will have an analysis done. If anyone can help me out let me know. I am under warranty but I am wanting to make sure my truck is not at the dealer for weeks.

05 Dodge 2500 QC 48RE no mods. all stock.

Thanks Brad

Smell it and if it smells like diesel fuel you have a bad injector that leaks fuel.

Thats the thing it really doesnt have a real strong deisel smell. Should it the smell be pretty noticable comparing to the way it smells normally. Also if its not diesel is it normal for your oil to fluctuate over time before the next change. I am sorta new to diesels and this truck has 21000 miles on it so I am a little concerned although the oil doesnt have a diesel smell. I figured if it was getting diesel in the oil that you wouldnt have to guess if it was or not from the strong smell of diesel fuel. thanks Brad

Well, I guess you can have oil levels go down as some of it is burned, but unless you have some oil bandit running around your neighborhood secretly adding oil to everyones truck I don't think the level could rise any, unless fuel is leaking in.

First off when was the oil changed last ?

I learned a short quick lesson if you change your on oil with the gallon containers look on the container. At least Mobil oil jugs aren't a gallon jug ya'll, it is 5 quart jug times 3 jugs equals 15 quarts could and would make oil level 3 quarts to much.

Well to much oil is not the case because It was changed 3 weeks ago and I checked it last week and it was fine now this week it looks like its adding some oil on its own.

how different was the temprature of the oil from when you first checked it to when it was you noticed it was up?

oil will expand when heated.

[on the engines i have at work, i can gain over 1" on the stick from cold oil to oil that is at 200*f.. [300 gallon capacity]

Thats a very helpful tip there Nick, and I am not so sure when I checked them as far as hot or cold but its not enough of an increase for an injector I dont believe. I hope not anyway. I will let it set all night tonight and that way I can compare it to the original way I checked it. Thanks Brad

Is the best way to check it is after its set overnight and cold. Because if I check it after its ran and wait 15 minutes its as if its overfull. thanks Brad

After checking it after its set overnight its ok though

thanks Brad

It takes a good 15 minutes after shutting off the engine before all the oil drains down into the pan. Checking the oil level too soon after shutdown could cause a person to overfill the crankcase.

Oil over full

I have a 2009 Dodge I bought it from the dealer with 13,000 miles He changed the oil the day I bought it upon my insistance because it was so black and I drove home 1100 miles. When I got here the oil was really black again and over full I changed it again I have put another 2000 miles on the truck The oil is really black again and the oil level is 2 inches over the full mark on the dip stick. Water is still full so I am assuming it must be fuel . This truck is equipped with an exhaust brake and I am wondering if it may be part of the problem ? Has anyone else had an issue with their Cummings with the oil level increasing ? I know I can have it analized and perhaps I should start there .
Don

Don't worry to much about the black color. With that third injection event it gets black real soon after an oil change.

I have several other diesel trucks ( not Dodge ) and none of them get as black as this Dodge/Cummings does in such a short period of time but I can live with that it's just the increasing oil level I am concearened about . If it's fuel and it's thinning out the oil it could result in engine damage from lack of lubrication

This is an easy one that you can solve for $25!

Just have your oil analyzed and you'll know exactly what's happening. Fuel, coolant, whatever. Maybe it's pure oil and you have a money maker there!!

How is your fuel mileage, white smoke when you start it after sitting all day or night, engine run rough then smooth out??

*** Your OIL level is increasing, ***
Jump right on over to the "My Oil Filter" is half low thread. This is whats happening more then likely. My truck started doing it lately, where dip stick is showing over full. I pulled off filter,, its half low. Check it out, and post backup.
