04 dodge 3500 stuck in limp mode

My dads 04 decided to go into limp mode today. It was shifting fine yesterday but this morning it took off in one gear and won't shift. No codes or check engine lights. It's got 185k miles on it but never had any problems till today. I put a water pump and ac pump on it a few months ago.

Do you guys think its a sign of the tranny taking a crap or something else?

Thanks Aaron

Check the trans relay first make sure there is power and relay is working. Check the fuse also here is wiring may be of help.

Sounds like a governor pressure solenoid and transducer needs to be replace. Take it out and shift it through the gears manually and see what happens.

Is there anyway to fix the 1212 back and forth shifts in the 48re? I've got 3 trucks and they all do it

We call that "shuttle shift". Upgraded BorgWarner governor pressure solenoid usually does the trick. Can be found for around $75 or less.

Might have the same issue here: Started slipping while in Tow/Haul mode coming out of 1st. Have to get heavy on the throttle and fan it to get it to shift into second. 2nd to 3rd is a little better and once in 3rd and O/D seems ok and holds. 178,000 miles on truck and transmission was serviced around 120,000 miles. Was told everything looked great then. Could this be a solenoid issue? How would I diagnose to tell if it is the solenoid?

If it does not manually shift into gear would it still be the governor pressure solenoid and transducer? Will it show a code on the scanner?

dodgeman01 I hope your dad has better luck than I did. I had very similar symptoms and hoped for it to be the governor pressure solenoid and/or transducer governor sensor, but unfortunately it was the torque convertor and ultimately I am ending up spending $4k on a new HD transmission. Check the fluid, if it's burnt you'll have a good idea where to go from there. Best of luck!
