04 Changes
04 Changes
New member with some questions. I'm in the market for a 1 ton truck and I'm strongly leaning towards the Dodge with a Cummins. Will there be any changes to the Cummins in the 04 MY. There was some speculation about EGR, can anyone confirm? What about the possibility of a VGT? If so, how would it be actuated, oil pressure or electric motor? Any information is appreciated.

Re:04 Changes
Can anyone confirm or deny the EGR for '04? I've seen posts of people swearing it won't be on an '04, and some that have. Does anyone have concrete info? <br><br>EGR is a nasty thing, my TDI has it, and with the crappy fuel available in the US, the egr spits a considerable amount of soot and crap back into the intake, causing nasty clogging often times. Get a look at this TDI intake with just 50k miles on it. Gotta love egr!!<br>
Re:04 Changes
Light man...you and I have the same toys and I totaly agree with the EGR on the TDI...have you had to clean the sludge out of your intake yet on your TDI??..if not...its a mess and not fun....REAL GOOOOEY!!,,,,BUT...got to love them diesels!!...how many miles you gots on your tdi??..mine is 56k but my buddies 1999 has 273000 as of saturday...I just love that car (my tdi)...ok..i am done

Re:04 Changes
CK, have you had your EGR settings adapted/fixed? There is a mod that changes the amount of duty % the egr is on, which is convieniently available to change if you have the vag-com diagnostic software. Thats one great thing about tdi's, for $150 and a laptop you can have a complete diagnostic computer for your engine. PM me if you need more info on this, but I adapted my EGR with only 800 miles on the car, and at 50k, my intake has an incredibly thin layer of black that you can wipe off with your fingers. That combined with re-routing the CCV system will keep your intake clean. The cleanout/desludging job is NOT a fun one, i've seen it done. Since I knew about these issues before I got my TDI, I've luckily had no problems. My TDI is a year old and a week, and will turn 50K tonight. (lots of driving for work!). The other option is to install a dieselgeek race pipe, which eliminates the egr, and is for 'off road use' only of course. THe problem with that is the check engine light..<br><br>I"m considering selling my tdi in a year or so and getting either a ram cummins or possibly a jeep liberty turbodiesel thats coming out. I'd really have to make my decision a bit earlier if the EGR is coming for 2004, because it really stinks. If anyone has concrete info on EGR for 2004 cummins that would be great.
Re:04 Changes
According to my conversations with the Cummins Techline, they could not give concrete evidence, but the belief was mid year 04 or after 1-1-04 as the truck build date. So you should be able to order an early 04, as I plan on doing. I hope to get my order in around late Spet or Early Oct to give plenty of time for truck to go to D status. ;D
Re:04 Changes
I talked with a Cummins engineer at the North American Farm Show and he told me there will be some type of polution control, but said the EGR MAY not be there choice. He said he could not tell me what they were looking at. <br> He did say the because of cost, DC would not put it on one day before the Jan 1 mandate. <br> I will order my 04 SRW 3500 as soon as the 04 books open up. I would not expect any great changes because they will only build that engine for 6 months before the change to the Smog Beater 2005 and a half.

Re:04 Changes
To answer the question on the VGT turbo chargers, Cummins has them on the ISX engines (15 liter), but it will take several years to configure and roll them out to the other engines they make. They may have been doing some prototyping on the ISB (5.9 litre that ours are), but those are not ready yet from what I've seen so far, and probably won't be for another year or two. This means exceedingly unlikely any of them will be on the '04 models.
Re:04 Changes
I really wish they'd hold off till '05 models with the egr/emissions crap. I need the 50mpg of my TDI for one more year before I'll sell it and get a 4wd. Still can't decide on going dodge ram cummins or jeep liberty diesel. The cummins is obviously cooler engine wise etc, but will be hard to park, less fun to drive, etc. The loads I pull are usually less than 2000 lbs also, hardly warranting a huge cummins. I want one though! ;D
Re:04 Changes
Dunno man I have a '96 Passat TDI 180ish on in never had the egr mods done, it goes just fine. Got a bit of a buck now when cold. Only thing I have done is the timing belt. Even if I had to yank the intake and clean it out one every 7 years that is no big deal to me....
Re:04 Changes
Spots, you happen to be a lucky exception to the rule because you either run good fuel, or your driving habits do not lend to intake clogging. With tdi's , constant city driving, or driving/shifting at low rpm cause intake clogging. <br><br>Spots have you actually pulled off the rubber pipe between the EGR and intercooler pipes to see how caked up it is? The slow clogging slowly takes away from performance and you don't notice it because it's gradual. I HIGHLY suggest you take off the EGR and look at your intake, or at least the tube to the intercooler and look in with a flashlight. Did you see the picture I posted above of the 50k intake? That is VERY common. Visit the forums at tdiclub.com (probably the best diesel forum on the web bar none in terms of intelligence and information available). Spots, on the tdiclub site there is a vag-com owner list. Find one in ft myers and i'm sure they will meet up with you and adapt your egr, it takes 2 minutes. <br><br>Not to say that all EGR systems will lead to intake clogging. My mercedes has an EGR system and ccv and have zero problems. I've also not seen a single intake clogging post on the mercedes forums.
Re:04 Changes
Yes I do realize that I am the exception to the norm with the VW. I am sure it has some clogging but at this point it is a beater so I won't do anything to it. It is gonna get dealt this fall IF they bring the Passat TDI to North America. I do go to tdiclub when I have problems (usualy electrical) they are great there. Just wanted to state that not all EGR systems will cause problems. Your MB is proof of that. Gonna go and pull the egr off the Passat to see how bad it is... :'( Thanks for the info...
Re:04 Changes
No problem. Also note that the front/intercooler side of the egr will be noteably cleaner than the back/intake side, and can be deceptive. You will notice a big performance gain and mpg gain from cleaning it out, but even if you don't, the EGR adaptation will help it from clogging worse. I did my egr at 800 miles on the car, and now with 50k mine is still clean.
I think this may be for a4's, but check out this link, a tdiclub member was nice enough to make a pdf with step by step intake cleaning instructions with pictures. That site is sure a resource. http://www.cst.cmich.edu/users/willi...TAKEMAN101.htm
I sure hope I can get my stuff together and get one of these HO's without any egr though =] I just heard back from Jeep, the liberty diesel will not be out until 2005. FYI spots, the passat tdi IS definitely slotted to come out this fall. Thats gonna be a sweet ride.
Edit: not sure if that link is working today, but you can go here as well on the TDIFAQ. http://www.tdiclub.com/TDIFAQ/TDiFAQ-7.html#g
