03 hard starting and ticking

So i stopped at the bank today and i came out and my truck took a bit of turning over to start. So long story short, it started up and ran but then i went to take off and i herd a hard ticking noise, almost like a lifter had come loose. So long story short, came home poped valve cover off and #1 cylinder exhaust valve rocker had alot of clearance(like 1/8" or more). Now the truck did not loose power and was running fine. Im not sure but i think i just need to adjust valves again but why all of a sudden? Truck has 289xxxkm on it and no issues with injectors and the valves were last set at 180xxxkm. Any ideas would help.

thanks all.

Check the cap on the end of the rocker arm. A small black plastic cap hold it on. Sometimes this cap will crack and the metal cap falls off. You will need to replace the rocker arm since you can not just buy the cap. Intake and exhaust rockers are different so make sure you get the correct rocker arm. Easy to install but will need to adjust the rocker arms when you replace it. It is called a socket in the picture #5. The retainer #4 is made of plastic and if it splits the retainer #5 falls off. Check around rocker arm area with a magnet with luck you may find it if one is missing from rocker arm. If the socket came off you can put it back on and adjust the valves.. It usually comes off if the valve clearance was too loose. I have reinstalled it when part was not available for a few days and have driven truck without any problems. Do Not drive without it installed since you will damage the valve bridge.
Good Luck

So it didnt fall off but i took the rocker off and i took the second cylinder exhaust rocker off and noticed that the little socket on the first one colapses up on that ball and the second one does not. So im guessing that the rocker is no good. Im gonna go see if i can get a new one and compare the 2.
