01 vs 07 5.9l trucks

I'm considering replacing my 2001 QC 5.9 24 valve with a 2007 mega cab 5.9 and was wondering what the differences might be? Do I need to replace the lift pump in the 07 as I did in the 01? Does the auto trans have a 100-150K life as my 01 has shown? How does the mileage compare? I got 18.5 in the 01 between Santa Fe NM and Las Vegas, and back, with the cruise set at 85ish. what else should i know? is there any sort of absolute DO IT!! or DONT DO IT!!

thanks!

This gets into the subjective opinion stage here.

In overall terms, you are going to experience a much more refined truck. I would make this swap in a heart beat.

There are a great many differences between the two trucks... mostly positive for the newer one.

Specifically to your questions, the in tank fuel pump found in the 07 is pretty reliable... especially in contrast to the cansiter mounted pumps of old. The transmission is also much better than the 01... but not bullet proof. You can get 150k out of them or more when not abused.

You will see slightly lower fuel mileage in the 07. Perhaps 1-2 mpg difference. You are talking a considerably heavier truck (by about a 1000 lbs) that is pumping out a lot more HP. (perhaps 40% more?) That takes fuel.

Good news is the injection pump in the new truck is much better.

Bad news is the injectors are not as reliable.

A smarty jr will likely get the 07 mileage close to your 01... not quite, but close.

Thanks for the info, turns out the 07 I was looking at was sold but I did go forward with an 06 which i believe is essentially the same as the 07 with respect to the differences you noted? Any suggestions as to what sort of gauges I want for this truck? any other immediate needs I dont yet know of?

fwiw the new truck is an 06, mega cab 2500, Laramie, essentially bone stock with about 165k miles.... I wish it were fewer miles but it is nearly 9 years old...
