Welding Question??????

I have allways disconnected the Batt. before welding on any car/truck. BUT all of that experience was on race & pre computer control. With all the techno wizz on the current models, should any other steps be taken? Don't want to burn out "mission control"

Thanks for any help. Dave

As far as i know just unhook both battery cables and thats it. I have never unhook the cables and just keep my ground close to where I was welding and have never had a problem yet. Not saying my way is right because I know I'm doing mine wrong. Just to lazy to unhook the cables.

I would make sure you have a good ground point close to the welding. We weld on sensitive crap all the time and never have any problem if the ground is good. If the ground clamp is on a painted surface and can flow back through equipment then you start to have problems.

But still it never hurts to remove both ground cables.

Cool Welding

Hi,
I would disconnect the ground from the battery. Not so important for stick or mig, but if you tig with hi freq, it will destroy the computer.

Very wise suggestion. Nothing ruins bearings quicker than welding current passing through them.

I've seen our "professional" welder at work, do a welding repair on a piece of industrial equipment.
He was welding through a huge set of bearings.

This is the same guy that hooked his ground clamp up to a piece of conduit one time. He fried every piece of wire that was inside. The electricians at work wanted to hang him.
