Vacuum Leak--Where to look first?

The other day may front axle did not engage in 4WD, and the dash light did not turn on. I checked the vacuum connections from the transfer case to the front axle and they seem okay. I only have 7in Hg vacuum at the front axle. I read somewhere that I should have 15. Where are common problem areas where I should go looking first?

Start at the vacuum pump on the engine ( right in front of your PS pump ) and work back. Notable areas are from the branch that goes to the cruise servo and near the cruise servo which gets hit with any battery acid that might leak and at the cowl where the lines meet and branch out.

.....or if you have vacuum at the 4x4 actuator, maybe the actuator is bad or otherwise damaged. Mine was bent slightly and after I straightened it, movement seemed to be ok when tested by hand but it still didn't work. Found one on fleabay, replaced and all is good.

Fixed the issue...

I decided to check vacuum near pump in order to determine what I was getting there. The first connection I found was an elbow it had a hole in it from dry rot. I did a temporary fix just in order to check vacuum. I had 25 inHg near the pump. I then check at a couple other locations and was close to the same reading. I had 23 inHg at the actuator.

I then became skeptical of the actuator itself. I took it off the truck and could blow on either inlet to move the piston but in one direction there was a leak. I replaced the actuator and am back in business. I also discovered a missing plastic clip on the fork. The new part came with new clips also.
