upper ball joints on 4wd?
There's always been a light "clunk" in my steering, since about 5K miles. Over the last two years, for other reasons, I've done a lot of front end work -- dual shocks up front, leveling lift using the D25 springs, Borgeson steering shaft, DSS, Darin's '03 track bar bracket and '03 trackbar, etc.
Truck always steers tight and true, slight clunk always remains. Yesterday, however, I noticed that the clunk went away for 50 or so miles after I greased the upper ***** joints. (I grease them every couple of thousand miles.) Regreased them, and the same thing -- about 50 miles, no clunk, then it comes back. Jacked the truck up this morning and did the shake-test on the wheels and components. No play at all. Brought the truck down, had someone turn the steering wheel while I closely inspected things. No play at all. Greased the upper ball joints again and then inspected/tested everything to see if there was a difference. None. Drove truck. No clunk. 50 miles from now, I'm sure there will be again.
Bad upper ball joints? Wouldn't have thought so because they seem fine. Any ideas?

Did you lift the truck with the suspension commpressed? May be a silly question, but thats the only way that you would be able to "wiggle" the tire. May also try a pry bar, although I think you have found your problem. just my .002
