tire size - 2001 3/4ton ram2500 4X4
I don't know about the Cooper ATR's, but I've got a set of Cooper ST's on now in a 265/75 -16E. I've been pretty impressed with them. The only downside is they don't hold up to gravel and rocky roads that well from my experience, really chews them up. This is the first set I've had on my personal truck, but I've run a couple sets on work trucks and they do great in snow.
As far as sizes, from what I understand 245/75-16 was the standard size, with 265/75-16's as an option.

Thanks Rowj for the info link pertaining to BFG TA/KO's as to why the E rated tire isn't snowflake rated - probably the +-3% tolerance with sizing. I'm leaning toward the Cooper ATR tires though they're most likely not going to be as good off road or in deep snow as the BFG TA/KO's - I do drive in deep snow, but mostly snow paked icy roads during Winter, and lots of asphalt and some gravel roads with moderate mud during "mud seasons" and Summer.
ROWJ if you are looking at an aggressive tire look at the mickey thompson mtz i put 315/75/16 on mine and they are awesome pretty good ride and not really that loud. i have about 8,000 on mine and wouldnt even think they had been on the road just my .02
My Toyo A/T's looked great at 8000 also, but at 20,000 they were obviously not making 40,000.
As for loud...took me a while to realize that with a non Common Rail Cummins, tire noise is pretty much irrelavent!

As a FYI: I decided to go with the Cooper LTR tires 265/75 R16 E load range - which I believe is the original size replacement. So far, they seem to be a good tire profile for deep snow (as in somewhat narro profile), and look decent enough for lite mud, and stock siping for snow pak/icy roads. Plan is to have them siped before next years Winter season. The Coopers also run acceptably quiet on asphalt at speed - definitely better than the Michelin ATR tires I had been running - which at 30K miles had about 5-10K of tread life remaining. All in all, the Cooper is so far a better choice over the Michelins. DD
I'm kinda new to the 2nd gen world and I'm trying to do some research on finding out what the biggest size tires I can fit on the stock wheels with stock ride height with no rubbing issues. The truck currently has 265 75 on it and I was thinking 285 75 could fit ok???
I was pleased this winter with the Firestone Destination AT's I bought. They are a million times better than the Toyo ATs that I had before them.
As far as the severe weather designation on the BFGs in load range E, BFG stated it was because of the increased tire pressure, they did not meet the DOT standards while aired up.

I'm running yokohama geolander & like them. Regardless of what you settle on, Discount Tire (in TN) price matches internet stores. Confirm with Discount, find your tire, print price. I paid approx $625 out the door includng TN 10% sales tax which was < shipping.
