Tire chewing

Guys,

I know this sounds kind of funny when you first mention it, but my CTD has been notorious for chewing up the outter edges of the front tires only, The tires are liberator 285's on 16x8 rims with only 4000 miles, due for their first rotation at next oil change. Today while airing up the tires and checking their pressure, i noticed both of the front tires were "chewed" up on the edges. I figure its from when i steer to either side.. Could this be the ball joints? or the steering trackbar etc... where should i start? what can it be? and what do I do? Fellas.. thank you once again for your time, patience and your help..

Ball joints, tie rod ends, alignment, track bar, the fact it's a dodge front end.

Tx - I had the same thing happening to me. Replaced the sway bar bushings, shocks, tie rods, and had the alignment done to the "good" specs that are on this site somewhere. I have checked the ball joints with the up/down and in/out test and they seem fine. All to say that I still have wear on the outer edge. You might start with the track bar and see if that helps before spending the $$$ for the other stuff unless you can tell that those other parts are shot.

Just my .02 but good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I concur....definitely toe. I had the same problem until I ditched the stock steering setup.

Your truck is the same year as mine, so I'm assuming you have the same tie rod setup. The problem with the "y" link tie rod is that every time the front suspension compresses, it causes the front tires to toe out. The tie rod ends are notorious for getting sloppy after a few miles too.

I spent a boatload of money on alignments and TRE's in the last few years, couldn't keep it aligned more than a few weeks. Since I've "re-engineered" the front end I haven't had any problems at all...
