tie rod ends
I've got 18,000 miles on my 02 and already have 2 shot tie rod ends. what on earth is up with that? I've been off road four times, each for just an afternoon, and terrain my grandma could drive. well except for about 15 miles total on two separate trips where I bounced around pretty good.

At this rate, I will have put the third set on just before the waranty expires at 36,000 miles, and then I'm on my own. that really sucks, of course, and I've scheduled a heart-to-heart conversation with the dealer service manager tomorrow. But really, what is going on here? did I just get bad parts off the lot (that would be nice) or is the front end really a piece of junk?

Marv says his DSS won't help the tie rod wear. What do I need to do to have a decent front end on this thing?

I'm sure not a believer in sealed suspension joints in heavy duty equipment!

What some of us have done, is get hypodermic needle tips to pierce and inject grease into all the joints we USED to be able to grease - time will tell if it helps or not - and for those trying it, DON'T overfill - those rubber boots are fully sealed and will rupture with too much pressure!

Re:tie rod ends
hey thats a good site. I have to say i'd rather be dealing with this problem than some of the Ford and Chevy warranty issues right now. so far the dealer seems to be working with me pretty well, too -- it pays dividends to foster a good relationthips with the service manager.

Re:tie rod ends
The front end parts do not last like they should for a HD pick up truck. I have replaced all of the steering linkages on my truck but before I put them on I drilled and installed grease zerks in all of them, to prevent the boot from blowing when I purge the joint I cut a small slit in the boot where its kinda hidden and it work like a charm. Been on there for about 100k km with no problems. The type of grease you use makes a huge difference so get yourself some Extreme pressure grease of some sort ( seems to smell like gear oil) which will make all the ends last much longer.

Good Luck

Jason
