Stock stereo problem

My stereo seems to be possessed... Some times only the clock works, but the stereo won't turn on. Some times no clock and no power. Some times the stereo will be on, then it goes to static as if the antenna was just knocked off, but the stereo won't turn off or allow me to tune it. Eventually, it "turns" off by itself. Some times it stays off for days at a time. Some times it works just fine for days at a time. When the truck is off, the stereo is off, and just cuz it worked when I turned the truck off, doesn't mean it will work when I next start the truck. Really weird...

I've pulled it and can find no loose wiring. A ground wire connected to a bolt in the rear of the unit dangles freely and appears to never have been connected to anything (no grounding metal within reach of it...) I've tried grounding this wire but to no effect.

Eventually, I want to put in a custom stereo but that is a while down the road... Any ideas?
Dave

you have to think, your stereo is 10 years old. Thats along time for stereos to survive. Maybe its time to get an aftermarket unit. they have them for every budget.

I ripped my factory radio out a couple of years ago. You can get a nice Pioneer or any other name brand for about $125 and about $30 for the mounting kit and the wire harness which connects directly into your factory wire harness.

True, and that's the ultimate plan, but engine, driveline and suspension are coming first. Then interior. I still need boost/pyro gauges w/ pillar mount. Also thinking about the 3gsk and new plate. My wife is also insisting on nerf bar or steps... I am also going to swap out rims/tires and take out the 5 inch lift and go down to a 2-3 inch (horses don't like 5 inch lifts while being towed...) So, lots of things on my wish list! And a new sound setup is definitely in the picture. Thanks for the input!

You can get pretty good used head units on eBay for about $30-35.
