steering play question

I noticed last might that my steering wheel was not as low as I usually like it (tilt steering). I lowered it and it seemed to really reduce the amount of slop in the steering today on the way to work. I read a post about the steering wheel actually moving side to side when pulled, but mine seems solid. Is it possible the shaft that goes through the tilt mechanism is loose and causing my problem? Can it be replaced, and how much lighter will my wallet be?

The Dealer, of course, wants me to bring it in and let them look at it before he can tell me if it is replacable or not....

I don't believe it would be warranty so I wanted to start with everyone here first.

Thanks, Roy
