Spare tire now!? . . . exhaust
Spare tire now!? . . . exhaust
All right - yet another thing to deal with. Just put the spare up under the new truck and realize now, with the 4" exhaust all the way back that I'm going to have to do something different. When I crank the tire back up into original, factory, position it's touching the tail end of the exhaust pipe. It's dark outside and I didn't look at the mounting brackets on the exhaust pipe to see if they could be moved all all. Any of you all with aftermarket exhaust have a problem getting the spare back up there (and it's only a 265 or whatever stock is)??? Any suggestions? I'd like to put 285+ on it but now I'm not sure with this spare problem. Thanks!

Re:Spare tire now!? . . . exhaust
I have a 285 spare under my truck and a 4" exhaust. Clearance of about 3/4" between exhaust and tire. You can make it work, just have the spare under your truck while puting on exhaust.
Re:Spare tire now!? . . . exhaust
We've installed three of Rip's 4" systems. Have not worked with any other flavor.
285's will fit. It's snug, but it works. We have not used clamps, except @ muffler. The rest is fully welded, as are the hangers.
Hopefully your system will allow enough movement for your spare to fit.
If I remember correctly, NAIL BENDER actually has a 305 underneath.

Re:Spare tire now!? . . . exhaust
I've got a 5 inch exhaust with a 265 spare, and I have at least an inch of space between. If your system is just clamped together, you should be able to take out the strait piece before or after the muffler and cut a bit out till it fits without touching the spare. This is what I had to do.

Does the 285 slip into the frame as the stock whatever does?
I tried my 255/85R16 and even a used tire wouldn't go in.
Thanks

285's are about 32" od, wheras the 255/85 comes in @ around 34", I believe. The 285 fits between the rails, but you'd need quite the shoehorn to get the 255/85 in

Yes, you are right Eric. :
But, my point about clearance is still the same being that the 305 and 285 are of the same diameter. The 305 is just a little wider. ;D

Re:Spare tire now!? . . . exhaust
Well tirerack says that the 255/85R16 has a diameter of 33.5" and the 285/75R16 33". When I tried to get my firestone 255/85s into the frame it would have needed a hydraulic shoehorn. It looked like 1.5-2" too small. Did they change the frames or something the like?
I do also have the exhaust exit to the rear. (Austrian regulations

Re:Spare tire now!? . . . exhaust
I have a 4" DPP turbo to tail and have lots of room between the "stock spare" and the tail pipe. Should be no prob with the rip system eigther.

Re:Spare tire now!? . . . exhaust
Be sure your spare tire has extra room (not too close to any exhaust piping).....I had a motorhome and had to use the spare.....when I pulled the spare down the heat from the exhaust pipe had charred the rubber well I had to use the spare any ways on the front....didnt get 5 miles and the spare blew out
"Just a thought of caution about the heat from exhaust"

Re:Spare tire now!? . . . exhaust
Good Question - I was wondering the same thing. I have the Banks 4" exhaust and my spare is a 255/85. It fits between the rails fine (a little snug) but there is about ¾” clearance between the tire and the exhaust pipe.
Does anyone know how hot the exhaust pipe gets that far from the engine and how hot can a tire get before it starts to deteriorate?
Pappyman - how far was your spare tire from the exhaust pipe and the engine?
My exhaust system was put together with the guillotine clamps so getting it apart will be difficult – any suggestions?
My tire can be held to the rear which gives the tire more distance from the exhaust pipe. Has anyone built a bracket to hold the tire to the rear? Or is there a problem with that idea?
