Question Shift Indicator Light

While I am getting used to the look and feel of the 98 I have been going over all the little things that need fixing. One of the issues I have found is this truck has a "Shift Indicator Light", while I don't normally use such a device, I noticed that it isn't working, and that bothers me.

Is there a known issue with this indicator? Is it just a dead bulb? Any easy methods to test it?

To my knowledge, the shift indicator is non-functioning with the CTD option - it is a gas only thing.....I have been in many 98 and up 2nd gens and that indicator illuminates on the autos too at start up when all the dash lights turn on for the diagnostic check.

All indications in the Owner's Manual point to it working. There is no mention that it is not applicable to the CTD.

My 1994 has a port in the dash for the shift indicator bulb but appears to have never had a bulb in it. I would tend to agree with the above post from CTD NUT.

Who shifts when the light tells you too, anyway? Unless it lights up at 3K

A buddy of mine has a 98 stick, his light doesn't work either.

I wouldn't use the darn light, just bothers me knowing something isn't working.

Yeah, that Arcitc Fox is nice, the slide out makes a ton of room in there. The *****'s is a blast, I can take it up hills and into places my friends with CJs can't get to...

The shift light is a gasser only thing since it works off engine vacuum.

I was thinking that it only functioned on the 1500 trucks. Dodge disabled them on the 2500 and 3500 trucks because it was expected that these trucks would be pulling a load and needed to be in the lower gear. Therefore the light would be on and you couldn't shift or didn't need to because of the load. Think I saw something similar to this in my manual.

My manual 1998 CTD 12v and 24v shows the indicator, discusses the indicator and says it works... Obviously they were mistaken. Luckily it isn't something real noticeable that it isn't working.
