Seat help.....my rear end is sore...

hey guys, bought a used truck...and it's used...the guy before me left an 155K miles dent in the seat and it smells awful. When it gets warmer out i am going to pull the seat and replace the carpet....( a big source of the smell ) but my seat is kind of uncomfortable....I was going to get some coveres ( love the wet okole' ones, had them on my jeep ) but that won't do anything for the lack of rear end support....
So my options are as i seem them...
1. see if i can find compatible year trucks with a less abused bench.
2. get them refoamed and reappolstered...
3. find a set of something compatible that is much nicer then what i have now...
4. sit on a pillow, and throw a sheet with a lot of febreeze on it, but i'd like to eventually use this truck as a DD....so less odor the better.

its a 1997 Standard cab, 40.20.40. No power

what will slide in there.

haven't done it - but i hear the seat bottoms from the passenger & driver seats swap back and forth with no problems. it would give you a quick fix while you found a more permanent option. . .

Seat Repair

A few months ago I had my drivers seat repaired. Had a tea in the fabric and took it to a upholstery shop. By the way my springs were broke also. He pulled the bottom setcion out in about 30 secs and had it on the bench and started cutting. Bottom line is in about a hour I had new fabric and instead of springs underneath he used a tough fabric for bottom support also added a little foam to the cushion before pulling fabric back on seat. Was quick and now the seat is great, cost about $150 here in East Texas.

I'm in the same boat. I bought a 1997 CTD in 1999 with 30K on it and the driver's seat was whooped. I had the foam replaced under warranty. The 1996 I now have has around 95K on it and the driver's seat bottom has had it too. I've got to go to the *********** tomorrow to pick up a vent actuator, while I'm there I'm going to get a price and part number on the seat bottom cushion. Its soooooo easy to R&R the cushion I might just have to do it.

You can add foam to the bottom of the seat by yourself. If you pull the seat out and look at the bottom you will see the springs and the hooks holding it in.
Next you will take the hooks off.
You then can add a high density foam ( I used 1" thick from fabric shop), cut to size and lay it on the old foam.
Next is the most important thing. If you noticed earlier, you will have seen that the springs cut into the foam causing it to breakdown. What I did was used a piece of carpet and layed that in between the foam and the spring.

Put the seat back together and your BUTT will love you for it.

Great idea. I was always leery of putting fabric store foam in because I always figured it'd go on top of the OEM stuff and make the seat look funny. Why didn't I think of putting it UNDER the OE foam?

Before you replace the carpet. Take some citric based degreaser and clean the hell out of it. Don't be afraid to apply it liberally, let it set, brush it with a stiff brush and rinse with plenty of water. A wet/dry vac can remove the water. You might be surprised how much help that can do for a greasy/soiled truck carpet.
