Same problem, new idea
Same problem, new idea
I originally posted this under "head scratcher from the new guy", but since my ignorace on the subject has throughly confused the issue, I have decided to start over.
Here's the simplified version:
-truck cuts out, same time gives me P1689 trouble code
-removed Edge EZ
-reset codes with scanner
-cleaned FACTORY connectors and reinstalled per OEM
-trouble code and cutout return as soon as I accelerated on first test drive
The P1689 is defined as communication error between ECM and injection pump module. Is the "module" for the injection pump a seperate part or is it internal as part of the pump itself? Should I continue to chase a connection problem or think about replacing parts?
Special thanks to all who have helped me get this far in the diagnosis.
P.S. I want to remove the Edge altogether since I pull alot of heavy trailers and I'm concerned about the effects of the EZ on my lift pump/VP44.

Re:Same problem, new idea
This is Quoted right out of the factory manual:
With the Bosch VP44 injection pump, there are no mechanical adjustments needed for fuel injection timing. All timing and fuel adjustments are made by the Engine Control Module (ECM). However, if a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) has been stored indicating an "engine sync error" or "static timing error", perform the following. *REPLACE THE VP44 INJECTION PUMP* .......
From what I can see in the manual (been looking at it for 1hr) the module is the pump, it's all one big unit. The only thing I can find in the book that is a module/fuel is a "Intank fuel filter module".... So what they are calling a "Fuel pump module" is the "INJECTION PUMP" itself. So it seems you have a bad pump or a bad ECM. I would call your dealer or a shop you can trust and ask them what they have found with this "code" and what they have done to fix the problem. My bet would be on the injection pump, just because of all the hooplla latly, i.e. differant codes but same problem (bad pump). I will read the manual a little more tonight, my eyes are going buggy right now
. Hope this helps ya out. 8)

The EZ and BIG injectors could have caused premature failure of the VP44 - good luck with it.

Is there any evidence that bigger injectors are hard on the VP44? To my way of thinking (which is probably all wrong), the larger injectors would cause the VP44 to work less because of the reduced pressure.

You raise a good point - as well, the EZ shouldnt be too hard on the VP44 either - but I have heard of failed VP's that were caused by the EZ fuel box....i dunno....could just have gotten hot and failed or threw a code as well.
