Replacing stock radio

I have a 97 Dodge 2500. My stock radio is going out. Any suggestions on what I should replace it with? I'm not a big radio/audio person. Also, I was wondering if you can take a radio from an 01 and put it in my 97? Thanks for your input and help.

the 01 should fit, and they are pretty simple to install. An after market stereo are easy to install, you have to purchase the face plate and harness adapter. good luck.

aftermarket radios are easy. to be honest i buy the adapters at wally world. about $20 out the door. the wiring adapter plugs right into you truck and the wires are color matching to the aftermarket radio. the both come with pretty decent instructions

Like you, I just had to replace the radio in my 1996 Dodge CTD. FWIW, and if you are set on putting a stock OEM radio back in, you can still get them through Dodge, but not all of the older models are available. I had an AM-FM, with a CD and the OEM Dodge Radio I replaced it with is a new AM-FM with a CD, cassette and graphic equalizer. Sounds better than my old one!

Thanks for the information everyone. John P what name brand/model did you put in yours? I'm wanting to go back with the AM-FM CD cassette type.

Go to crutchfield.com I have bought 2 new aftermarket radios from them and they give you lifetime technical support and when you buy the radio they also give you the mounting bracket and wiring harness all free of charge. They are an awesome company and I will never buy a radio from anybody else! The directions they give you are also awesome and are easy to follow and makes it maybe a half hour job to install. Also you can get a very nice aftermarket radio for the same price as a stock one and they sound 10 times better. Just my opinion

You are very welcome Sir!

For your information, my AM-FM CD, Cassette, with Graphic Equalizer is made by Mopar/Dodge. The part number on it is: #4858579. If you are interested you can call and talk with Assistant Parts Manager, Kathy Fallon, at "D&E Dodge", Wlimington, N.C. @ (910) 799-5502. She is a great lady and won't tell you "Radios for that old truck are no longer available." That is what I was being told until I finally got smart and went to her.

Same here, I've bought two radio's for different cars, time to install each was maybe 45 minutes tops and most of that was to solder connections on the harnesses they give you.

I've looked at a few new radios and found that they make them with no CD slot, just a USB port and/or iPod hookup. I would much rather have this setup. A flash drive is far less problematic than a CD player, easier to create/edit/change, and takes up far less room for storage than a big pile of CDs. When you get out of the truck, you can slip your 1000 songs into your pocket! I think CDs are going the way of the 8 track.
