Removing body molding
Removing body molding
I wanted to update the look of my truck by removing the molding and replacing it with molding just for the door. As I removed a small strip, the majority of the adhesive stayed on the truck. I got out the heat gun and scrapped the bulk off. I tried to use "Goof Off" to remove the rest and it didn't seem to dent the rest. I tried using elbow grease and still nothing.
I am afraid to try anything else because I don't want to damage the paint.
Has anyone removed the molding and if so how did you do it, i.e. techniques, tools, solvents, etc.
Thanks
Greg

Hey gregway, try some rubbing compond that is what I had to use to get the brown stuff off under the adhesive. Then be sure to rewax the area or the whole truck, it will take it off just as easy as the goofoff took the glue off. It is the only thing that I found to remove what is left. Goodluck,,Rick
Goof off and ALOT of rubbing got all of my moulding off. I also waited for a hot day which loosened the adhesive some. I also washed each section immediately with soapy water. Be patient, it will come off.
i've had good luck with 3-m adheasive remover in the past. I also used plastic scrappers like the metal kinda you use to spread drywall mud, but plastic not metal...
just takes a lot of time though if the truck is older. I had a 94 chev that had chrome rocker panels along with the molding. man was that a long couple of days.

3M Adhesive remover, saturate the surface with lots of it, let it sit a minute, resaturate, rub, resaturate, rub....should peel right off. Any rubbing compound will remove PAINT, which you don't have alot of to begin with! Kent industries also makes a good adhesive remover. Just use it liberally.....
I took all the name tags, badges and striping off ours when it was still new. Only thing left on was the black strip on the doors. Used a hair blow dryer to soften up the adhesive and pulled the badges off, then most of the adhesive. The rest I softened up with the cheapest paint thinner from Home Depot applying it with a rag. Let it sit for a minute or two and then lots of elbow grease to get it off. Once it was all off used some good paste wax to protect the area.
Everyone gave great advice and it got wandering over to 3m's web site and I found a few really cool products.
Check them out.
Molding and Emblem Removal Tool
Molding Adhesive and Stripe Removal Disc
I am going to try both. Hopefully they will take some time and effort out of this project.

Have any of y'all had any problems with the paint under the molding/badging/decals being a different shade than the paint around it, since it hasn't been exposed to several years of sunlight? This is mainly what I worry about when considering removing stuff on a 4 year old truck.
There is a very obvious outline of my RAM 2500 badge on both doors since I took them off. Not so much under the trim but there is a definate color differnece on the doors. Plus I got the worst color to do it on, DC GRAY! Peels like an orange.
