My 2001 3500 won't run on high beams, when you flick the switch the headlights go off, I have replaced/checked the builbs and no difference.

When you pull the high beam switch back the high beams come on while you are holding it, but as soon as you let it go, the high beams go out, I am suspecting the switch, any other ideas.

If it is the switch how hard is it to replace the switch on the column.

Yup, it's the switch, common problem.

You might try spritzing some contact cleaner in there and excersizing the switch before you go shell out for a replacement.

Ordered a switch since the spray didn't work, just tried it, ouch, 72 bucks canadian

 

This has always worked for me.
It's my belief that dirt cruds up the high beam contacts when the brights aren't used much.
Just working the switch back and forth occasionally prevents dirt build up for me, lights don't have to be on.
If you have to replace the multi-function switch it's not too bad of a job.
Dealer only part though, about $70

 

This happened to me, but it was the bulbs. Both brights burned out at the same time.
