power steering problems

I have been trying to install my power steering pump but cannot get the shafts to line up. I worked at it and tried to put the p/s pump on by itself and I tried to bolt the vacuum pump and the p/s together and do it that way but i still couldn't get it in. Any suggestions?

rotate the gear on the vacuum pump until the shaft aligns, it will slide into place. Don't forget to install the two bolts on the back of the pump from old one, I missed them at first glance and had to install them once it was on the truck and noticed a small leak

I picked a new seal at Napa for the vacuum pump while it was out and greased the shaft and seal before re-installing.

It should slip together and seat all the way with very little pressure (like a couple of fingers worth).

easier next time to pull both assys off as one unit and reassemble on the bench, also you can have someone turn the engine via the alternator nut, while you slide the vacuum pump back on, first time I did one i spent hours trying to get it to lign up, next time took 1/2hr to remove and replace the assy

I got it in now, just had to have the shaft centered. Even though it was in it was not centered so the other piece would not fit in.
