Is my truck a "peeler"?

my hood is starting to do this, previous owner had the entire truck re-painted several years back. is the original primer the cause or can I just sand smooth and have it re-shot?

"is my truck a peeler?"

Does it have Dodge emblems?

J/K, if it is the original primer, then you have to take it to bare metal.......

A 95 will keep peeling due to the lousy paint job. As said, the only way to stop it is down to the metal and redo the whole job. Real pricey. I just keep putting Rust Bullet on my 95 to control the rust.

That doesn't look like peeler. Peeling paint you will see right away. It is missing chunks right to the primer.
Yours looks like oxidized paint, possibly was painted with cheap quality paint/clear ie MAACO. You can sand down to primer and seal with epoxy primer and reshoot.

It was a cheaper job than maaco- I think just enough to sell the truck. Do you think the stock primer would be ok if I sanded the truck lightly and shot it with this?:

I think the issue IS the primer- the paint won't bond properly to it.

I agree with SilverR/T. The peeler's paint flakes off in pieces, leaving a smooth grey primer showing.

That looks like oxidation or failure due to lousy prep....

Personally I think bedliner belongs inside the bed not on the whole truck. If you do decide to bedline your entire truck make sure you prep it well and there's no rust underneath or it will just spread under your bedliner.

[QUOTE=joem;3184499]my hood is starting to do this, previous owner had the entire truck re-painted several years back. is the original primer the cause or can I just sand smooth and have it re-shot?

My 95 did the same, (it is a primer issue) started when it was about 3 years old, looked like small pimples in the paint on the horizontal surfaces at first, 15 years later it looked like yours. When the truck was 3 years old the best Dodge would do was split the cost 50/50. My logic was I'd already paid for one paint job, didn't want to pay for another.

Well, it finally got to the point that I pulled ALL the trim, bumpers, lights, everything off and had it painted last year. Since it stays in a shed 90% of the time I cheaped out and got a good looking two part polyurethane red/white (no clear coat) waterfall paint job. I did not take it all down to metal, only on the hood and top of the cab. So far it still looks like the day I picked it up a little over a year ago. I'm happy.

To continue; Lit'l Bro's 95 with flat bed was doing the same and looked pretty sad until a couple years ago. Over the course of a week, when he had a few minutes and a weekend he used single edge razor blades to scrape the bad paint/primer off to the metal. It was then painted with Imron, which is a true polyurethane. Cost was way under 2K (remember flat bed which wasn't painted) he also totally stripped everything off the truck, basically all the painter had to do was a little scuffing, fix a few small dents and spray.

Good luck.

Buy a case of beer and some coarse paper invite some friends over with sanders and have a "sanding party", you'll be surprised how quickly the paint comes off.

Will do with the sanding party- I have plenty of friends that would love to help. Im still pondering paint vs bedliner. The truck is used for hauling + hunting and the brush really scratches up paint. but bedliner wont look all that great when on vacation in a nice campground when pulling the trailer with the family.
