Lower Ball Joints

I did a search but I still have some questions. A friend of mine has a 2000 2WD Dually and the lower ball joints are bad. Can you replace just the ball joints or do you have to replace the whole lower control arm. If so where is the best place to get them. The dealer wants $300 a piece for them. Is there an aftermarket company out there that has them cheaper. If you can just replace the ball joint where is the best place to get tem.
Thanks for any help.

Yes you can change just the ball joints and I prefer Moog brand.

You should be able to get some ball joints at NAPA that come with a lifetime warranty. They are pressed in but don't let that scare you. What I did is separate the joint from the part that holds the hub and put a jack under the control arm and proceed to beat the heck out of the ball joint. It takes a while but it does come out. When I installed the lower ones I put the jack under the ball joint and hammered the controll arm down on to the ball joint. It ain't the best way but it did work for me.

If you know anyone that owns a garage see if you can borrow a ball joint press to install and remove them. It's much easier and you won't damage them this way. When you beat them in many times they don't seat fully and wear back out or you damage the housings.
