Looking at getting a 99

Looking at getting a 99, 2500, 4x4, 24v, auto, ext. cab, short bed. Not new to cummins, just new to 2nd gen, had 1 1st gen and on my 2nd 3rd gen. Is there anything in particular I need to look at with the 2nd gens? Truck is completely stock, ex-oilfield truck so its been rode hard and put away wet, it is solid, no rust found and other than the tailgate, no other major dents. Mileage is unknown right now as the batteries are dead. Thanks in advance..

Ive not looked it over that close yet. Its a pickup we have at work and I have not had time to dig in to it to deep yet. Where on the block can I look to see which one it is?

By this time I don't think I'd worry too much about the block. Used as you note it would have shown up long ago.

I be most suspicious of the auto trans. Check it thoroughly, it's not a cheap fix, or plan on an upgrade.

Check out the front end. Track bar and moving parts.

Cracked dash?

Hopefully it has a fuel pressure gage.

I have started replacing parts in the front end(track bar), tie rods will be next. Its a company truck currently and I'm fixing as much as I can on their dime before I get it. The transmission was replaced about 1000 miles ago with some internal upgrades according to the paperwork. The problem I'm running into now is the speedo is inop but the trans shifts into all gears just like it should. The brake light is on but I think that could be something to do with the rear brake level valve. That and the 10-15 second crank time to start it after its sat overnight.

The speedo issue could still be the speed sensor in the rear. It uses the tranny speed sensor for shifting. The rear sensor can cause the brake light issue as well.
The long crank time could be a diaphragm inside the VP44 that leaks. As far as I know, it only causes a long crank time after sitting overnight. No way to fix, that I am aware of, w/o replacing the entire pump.
99's had lift pump issues, so you'll want to know if the fuel pressure is good, at least 10psi.
And if you're happy with the brakes, so be it. I hated the brakes on my 99. Third gen brakes are a world of difference.

I did find out that the lift pump was changed over to the in tank pump and if I bump the start once or twice before starting it, it'll fire right up. And no, I'm not a fan of the brakes on this thing. Major brake upgrades will be coming soon. My goal right now is to make it safe to drive as right now it'll throw you into the right side ditch if you're not paying attention and I dont think the rears are working at all.

I've had my 01 now for a few years. I would never buy another 24 valve unless it had been converted to a P pump. The rest of it is pretty much same old same old.
