Looking at a '98. Anything I should know?

Hey guys, I am going this evening to look at a 1998 model Dodge with a 24v Cummins in it. Are there any obvious things I should take into consideration?

Is the 53 block desireable? What other type blocks are there in these trucks. I did not buy the '98 but I am in the market for about a '98 to '02 model 24v Cummins. Is there any quirks with certain year models? I have been looking at a 2001 model also that has a six-speed tranny in it. Anything I should look for specifically on the '01 model? Thanks alot guys!

The '53' block is NOT desirable: Prone to cracking.

Do a search on '53 block crack' and you'll find more info than you know what to do with!

Thanks. So I did the search and saw the 53 is not desireable. Are there any specific year models that did not have a 53 block? Or, is it a random thing? Thanks!

The '53' blocks did not start until late 1997 (model year 1998). Some late 1997 build date 12V motors had them. I don't know what the population numbers are like, but they are known to be in 1998-2001 model year trucks.

Pretty much all you need to know: http://www.stamey.info/Truck/Cummins53BlockFAQ.htm

If I were to buy another 2nd gen 24v, I would take it for a test drive past an Autozone and ask them to pull the codes on the engine, especially if the truck does not have fuel pressure gauge, which will tell you if the lift pump is not functional. If you get P0216 or other injection pump code, haggle the price down $1500 lower of what you already agreed upon. This is what the replacement injection pump will cost.
