Lights flicker when above 1500 rpm???????
I have a charging system problem. It started out as an occasional flicker every now and then, and has progressed to a very obvious and annoying flicker anytime the engine rpm is above ~1500. This inconsistent voltage is also causing the cruise control to surge a lot. I'll be cruising along and suddenly the boost gauge surges up to about 30 for a second and I'm going 5 mph faster, then it slowly creeps back down.

The problem is getting worse. Anyone have any ideas? The alternator is the only rpm related item, but the dodge tech I talked to said that alternator failures are very rare on these trucks. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks
Just cause they are very rare doesn't mean that it doesn't happen. Check the connections on the back of the alternator and make sure that none are loose or something. I'm not sure on this, but you may have a short somewhere. Don't quote me on that though. I'd first check the connections. Maybe clean em real well also. If that doesn't work, then chances are that it is the alternator.

Check and clean the ground cable connections at the engine and the body.
There was a TSB out refering to loose connections in the Power Distribution panel/box under the hood.
You might want to double check all the connection there also.
???
Re:Lights flicker when above 1500 rpm???????
I have the ISB and the Dodge charging system in my truck. I had the same problem that you are talking about. If I measured the voltage at the battery it would rise and fall very quickly, about 2 Volts. I do not use the PCM to regulate the alternator. I use a old Mopar style regulator. I changed the regulator and it did not fix it. I had the alternator removed and checked out. I had the brushes replaced which seems to have cured the problem. It now runs at a steady 13.8 V to 14.0 V
