Anyone ever have the bulb in the plate light crumble to pieces while trying to remove it?
i have the bottom of the lamp still in the socket and can not get a grip on it- errrr
what have you guys done when faced with this problem??

yup- several times- by that time the bulb socket was toast anyway. The contacts were corroded bad and the socket itself was crumbling.

Got some from a junk yard- next step is custom for me.

 

they get too hot and start to melt and corrosion. either get new ones pretty cheap at www.lmctruck.com and get led bulbs. run at a cooler temp or find a bigger aftermarket light from a trucker shop that would would bolt over oem spot. either way try to go led runs cooler. plus the factory if you go this way get some dialetric grease for the rubber sockets they dry rot real easy.

 

I bought one at WalMart last year. Works fine and exact match.

thet did seem to self destruct- dry rotted
i will replace them and go with the led lamps and the dilectric grease

If you can't remove it with a carrot then try needle nose pliers and if it's wrinkled and non-useable, well... new is on the grocery list.

 

I used Gorilla glue to re-install them. So far so good, 3 mo later. I'll replace w/LED next time.

 

Just picked up 2 new harnesses at dealer for 10.86 each.2 new 168 bulbs $3.
good for another 10 years.

 

good price a year ago when I priced them at my local dealer they wanted around 40 for both harnesses and around 10 for new lense/covers. but after reading this thread again I took out the led lights I put in and put back the stockers to see how much heat diff. and you can feel how warm they get compared to the led bulbs. this as well as time is why my sockets dry rotted.

 

just replaced mine this week too adv. auto got em for 11.?? ea. had to crimp w/ solderless connectors though they came with a plug on the end. i just cut it off and heat shrunk the connections.

no if I remember what I did was went through www.ledlights.com gave them my oem number and they had diff choices on alot of them with length color etc. I bought a few some stronger ones for my recon smoked lights lic plate lights and have some dash ones but haven't wanted to tear apart the dash again. give em a look

Just replaced one of mine the other week. Got the one from advance and used solderless connectors. May get the factory harnesses though.

 

i got the wiring harness from a local dodge dealer- 14.00 each so they are all back together, i also had to relamp my roof/cab marker lights- do yourselves a favor and pick up some #12 x 1 -1/2 inch stainless sms to replace the factory screws- some of mine were rotted down to the size of a #6 screw shaft and i was lucky to get the broken ones out with my linesman pliers- grease the sockets to ease the next lamp replacement, i also greased the plastic insert that the mounting screws thread into- good luck- if your truck is around the same year as mine and you have not had to service these yet- your mounting screws should be as rotted as mine were
