Intermittent Cruise

The cruise on my 95 2500 diesel 2wd AT has become intermittent. It will catch when I hit the "set" sometimes but not consistently and there is no apparent pattern. Some times it even falls out of cruise mode for no reason (ie. smooth road and steady speed).

Could it be the brake light switch itself? There don't appear to be any loose wires.

When I take it to the dealer the truck is cunning. It seems to work just fine when they test drive it and the mechanic looks at me as if I'm nuts. He says he can't diagnose something that seems to be working. I guess he doesn't believe anything I describe for him.

Of course the moment I'm 10 miles down the road the truck goes back to its normal behaviour and the cruise fails to catch.

Has anyone had this problem? I see lots of threads whrere the cruise just stiops working completely but none so far where it works sometimes but not others.

I took out my brake switch, in the (so far unsuccesful) proccess of diagnosing my cruise. There is room for adjustment - you could move the switch a bit forward so you have to step on the brake more to make the lights come on. This might solve your problem if it is caused by an oversensative switch.

Have you checked your vacuum lines? They are often the problem.

Try to use the cruise while holding upward pressure with you're foot, on the brake pedal. thats the easiest way to diagnose the brake switch.
