idlin your truck

hey i was messin around with my cruise control one day, and it started idleing my truck. like i would use the buttons to accelerate (and speed up my engine) and cruise button to (slow down the engine).

i was in park and sitting in my driveway. i havnt been able to reproduce it again and was just wondering what and HOW i did that?

It is called high idle i have newer model trucks that have it activated on both im not real sure if it works the same on an 02, but the way to do it is to turn your cruise on the use the accel and decel to make it idle up and down how you want it. Works really well in the winter time bc it takes so long for them to warm up.

cowboy, if you figure it out, please post up you findings. I knew this was possible with some third gen trucks but never heard of it on a second gen. I would be very interested to know what's up.

Interesting, I didn't think the 2nd gen ECM had the capability for that.

If it is going to work, I'm guessing you'll need to be in Park with the parking brake set. Turn the cruise on, then use the Accel button to raise the idle.

There's a whole list af parameters that need to be present for that to work.

One of them is outside temps below 20F IIRC.

Cold weather high idle is available on 2000-2002 trucks, but you need to get the reprogrammed ECM.

That is the auto high idle for the 98-02's, he seems to have stumbled upon a manual high idle that isn't a stick from the seat to the pedal.

I remember seeing a truck (2nd gen) running "rough" in a parking lot early in the morning. The guy came out and I asked him, he said it was 3 cylinder high idle. The other three cylinders act as a load to warm up the motor. He said it was a reflash deal through the dealer...

Smarty software gives the high and 3 cylinder idle automatically. But that kicks in on its own, not manually adjusted like what the OP is talking about.

Ive only been able to enable the high idle once, the temp was 5 degrees. Had it in the teens (temp) and it wouldn't work...

Buddy of mine has an '04 that will cruise up and down...as far as your combo, try a couple of different things....try with it in "N" with park brake set and see if that works. I believe the park brake has to be set for his to work, not sure on tranny selector position. On my PowerStroke, I tied into the snowplow option with a toggle switch, but I don't think the Dodges have that...

When I had my 2000, I made my own out of an old a/c solenoid from a 80's era gm product. Worked great, only cost about $20.00 for parts and I could kick it on high idle when ever I wanted. Also worked great in summer for the a/c and to cool the tranny off.

PM me if you want the install instructions.

You would think they would design it to do this anyways, since it has PTO covers on the trans, and typically when running a PTO you idle up....Makes sense to me at least. We had an extra hand throttle off a wrecker layin around our shop where i used to work, considered hookin that up for warming my truck in the winter.

The trick is to warm it up with a high idle and not let it just idle.

Tate, I thought the 3 cyl. Hi Idle was also adjustable thru the cruise?

So the ECM has the input for a PTO switch (pin #26). What does this switch actually control? From the FSM all I can see is that this tells the ECM that the PTO is engaged and the ECM will disable certain OBD II functions until it's turned off. What functions are they referring to?
