Hood Latch Issue (I need to open the hood)

Well, it seems that the title tells most of it. I had a bad day vehicle wise yesterday. My lug nuts almost came off one tire, so I stopped to fix the problem and found fuel pouring out of my engine compartment.

Well, after rigging that together just to get to my apartment, I tried to open the hood to see if the thing was holding and now the latch must have broken. The in cab release works fine, but the secondary hood latch is loose. Either the release broke off or just came undone. I can pull the release down it's runner so that it drops down behind the bumper but I cant seem to find the top part it hooked onto.

I have searched on here and only can find recalls for stuff like this. I dont need to fix this yet but I just need to get the hood open so I can service my fuel problem (A little more pressing at the time). So can anyone give me an idea of how to get the hood up, or somehow find the release?

Thanks,

Doug

oops, sorry. It is a 1995 2500 single cab slt. I replied to your pm also. Thanks again for the help. I will be working on it tomorrow when it is light out and not snowing. Being in syracuse, ny this time of year hampers the working hours on the truck.

Can someone take a picture of the hood release mechanism and post it for me? You would have to open the hood and take a picture behind the grill. My release lever came undone and I want to see how it is supposed to be attached. I have a 99.

I got it. It was dark before when I found the broken lever problem.

I was able to look behind the grill of the side and position the lever rod underneath the arm that it is supposed to be attached to. Then I just pushed it up an opened the hood! EASY!

There is a hood latch recall for some years.
You can find out if your truck is eligible here, you will need your VIN> http://www.dodge.com/webselfservice/...ilForm(%27R%27)

Well this is a long time coming, and I apoligize for not responding back to this thread. I have recieved so much help on here so I feel bad for not helping other folks. Okay, what I did was I basically ripped out the mechanism rod after it fell apart. Then I attempted to put it back together but time and time again it just kept falling apart easily. So, I took out all the parts and canned the whole bottom grill latch setup. I took some wire (lower gauge, pretty stiff) and wrapped it through the grill and around the metal hook that secures the hood down. The wire on the outside I made a loop. It looks a little rough but I havent had a problem so far. It wont unlatch unless I actuate the incab release. But it is nice because it wont open unless I pull the cord even if the in cab release has been pulled.
So, not a beauty look but it works and is cheap. Also, so far it has been reliable.

Good luck
