headlight switch color codes
headlight switch color codes
This 1997 12v that I receintly picked up has been modified in the wiring harness area, and that is putting it nicely. The headlight switch went bad so they cut the plug off and put two toggle switches in place, which would be ok but twist ons and smoke while on, nothing else works.
I have a 1999 service manual and info on the engine, but I need to clean up the headlight switch setup. I have wired and installed two good switches that are controlling the park and headlights but I need to get a pinout on the color codes so that I can get interior lights and other systems working again.
If someone has the Dodge Service Manual for this truck, please list the wiring color codes as they are on the headlight switch as the '99 is different.
The interior lights do not work for several reasons but I have no idea which the wires are to start tracing the problems, can't turn them on. There are 12 or 13 wires there.
It should be illegal to sell wire cutters to morans!

I have a 97 factory service manual, but the plug that goes into the switch is'nt shown separately that I can find. Can you list the wire colors? As you have prolly discovered LG is park lts and LG/WT is headlights. Those wires go to the multi-function (dimmer) switch. dome lt is PK, cargo lamps are PK/DB (by the way, if you reverse them the cargo lt will come on before the dome lt). TN/OR goes to the fusebloc, comes out OR to the inst cluster. Short of pulling my dash apart I need help from you for the others.

thanks Gary, I may get the time to work on it tomorrow or Monday and will let yoou know. I now have the dome and cargo so that will get me started, hopefully. The only one I am now missing is the fog light wires, I think. The first challenge is to get interior lights working. The door switch is broken and none come on through testing. With this help maybe I can get them.
My manual on the '99 has a whole chapter showing all switches and componants with the wires that go to them and the color, thought the earlier manual would be the same.

Fog lt wiring involves 6 or 8 different pages. My book shows a "fog lamp switch", which appears to be separate from the headlamp switch. There is also a diagram for DRLs.
After a little searching I found the pin-out for the headlamp switch connector. Last night I was trying to trace wire diagrams. I don't know why, but it does not show the dome lt, but here it is. The number before the color is gauge.
B1 12RD/LG fused B(+)
B2 14PK/RD fused B(+)
B3 18LB key-in ignition switch sense
D 22PK/DB cargo lamp switch ground
H 16LG headlamp switch output
I 20TN/OR panel lamps dimmer switch signal
P 16LG/WT fused B (+)
R 16BK/YL park lamp switch output
U 22BK/LB left front door jamb switch sense
As you can see a couple colors don't jive from the wire diagram. If this helps or if it confuses the issue let me know.

Ok Gary thanks, I will work from there. the dome is tied up with a seperate two pin plug that plugs seperately to the front of the switch the colors are yellow and yellow/black. I will try to trace from there. then the question comes, do they get grounded or go hot???? Or just connect together? Oh well some trial and error coming. Thanks for the effort.
Other than the cargo light, which baffles me, as far as I know the 97 uses hot connections. Which reminds me, if you want to wire the low beams to come on with the high beams I have the diagram. If there are some other wire colors in there I'll try to find where they go.
Ok here is what I have after an afternoon of tracing and wiring.
Rd/lg + to both park and head switches and to pk/db (Cargo)
Rd is not hot find no function
lg/w not hot find no function
bk/yl could find no function
lb makes the dash buzzer on, not used
lg head light through switch to rd/lg as above
bk/yl park through switch also with tn/or panel to rd/lg as above
from separate plug y and yb connected together with switch for dome
results.... Head and park and panel work great
pushbutton dome lights work great
when turning on the switch for interior lights, all interior lights come on along with the cargo lights. but they fire a little low and then reduce quickly to a dim light. I can live with it I guess but would really like to get the interior lights bright and possibley the cargo separate.
Any suggestions would be great, I have no schematic on the truck.

Here is what I've got.
RD/LG is the hot wire fuse 6 40A PDC. It branches to LG/WT to the dimmer switch-high beam/high beam flash It comes out the dimmer sw as RD/OR
Branch LG to the dimmer sw is low beam. comes out of dimmer as VT/WT
The hot wire to both the dome and cargo lights is pk from fuse 17 15A. The headlight switch provides the ground YL is dome, PK/DB is cargo. After the lights both ground wires are BK/OR The cargo lts on mine do not come on with the courtesy lts like a Ford, they only come on thru the headlt sw.
I'm showing RD as a 12 Gauge wire from pin 7 of the ignition sw. It comes from Fuse 3 40A PDC. RD powers elec door locks and/or a remote keyless entry if equipped
you may be getting the dimming lts if you are sending power to yl and/or pk/db
Have you checked on getting a new switch from the dealer? I have read somewhere that as a kit (for a recall notice possibly) it has a plug and shrink wrap connectors.

Ok many thanks for the information, I finally got it the way I want it.
The problem I had was a bad, not a burnt fuse on the module.
I now have four switches where the ash tray was.
The are truck 35 amp toggles with #12 wire connecting and soldered to the harness.
Switch one Headlights
Switch two Park/instrument
Switch three Interior
Switch four Cargo
Halo works
Door switches/interior lights function.
Push interior lights work
Wiring:
Positive…rd/gr, pk(red) tied together
Park Tn/or and bk/yl switched to positive
Cargo..pk/db switched to yl
Dome bk/or switched to yl
Head lg switched to positive
No connections to bk/db, bl, gn/wh
All combined wires were combined in the oem switch.,
I also have found the slight drain that these trucks have sitting a long time, it is the module that controls the lighting and power door locks.
I have not found a listing for the blue wire but suspect it is a ground for the key sense and door/seatbelt buzzer. That is what the other unconnected wires are for and I did not want them working.
The red wire is pink on mine, definately not red but same function.

Glad you have had success. I show LB is the buzzer for key in sensor. The only DG/WT I see is in the multifunction switch to the wipers (park sense). No luck at all with BK/DB
Glad to be of help
