Guys with breather hoses, can you check something?
I was doing a walkaround after driving the usual 40 miles to work this morning, and happened to look under the front with while the engine was idling. I was surprised to see visible "smoke" puffing out the the breather hose. I don't think I've checked it before with a hot engine. Is this a normal condition? Oil consumption is nil.

I have never looked during the daylight, but at night with the lights on particulary when cool out it smokes pretty good or is at least very visible. I remember the first time I noticed it I thought holy cow what the heck is wrong. I also have nil oil consumption. Have heard others have noticed the same thing. I am not a tree hugger but you have to wonder why we have the open crankcase breather when gassers do not and have not for many years (30+ I think). It surely has to do with the heavy duty designation of the engine. The epa must figure it is not noxious enough to worry about either that or an oversight on their part.

Take a look under the big rigs at a truck stop just after they pull in on a hot day. You would think the breather was a cracked open L.P. drain on a steam plant header.

That info is good to hear.
One thin I have to do this weekend is to extend the hose a little longer. My front axle and diff cover is coated with oil and grime. Thanks!

Biggest negative is the mess you just described. Moving the bottle will not eliminate the mess, just move it, but keep your cooling sufaces functional.

Well, not necessarily...
;D ;D
I've moved mine down to the front swaybar by extending the tube, and use a modded bicycle water bottle and holder - the holder mounts to the swaybar exactly as it would on a bike frame, but horizontally. Of course, I drilled vent holes in the new bottle.
I then take a couple of old worn out socks to use as a cover over the outside of the new bottle - that allows the bottle to vent properly, and the socks absorb what small amount of of oil vapor that does escape the bottle.
I have been changing the old socks at regular oil change intervals - no drips, no oily film ANYWHERE on the engine or truck undercarriage - and it's convenient to service, since I'm already down there anyway...

I did both of mine similar to Gary's. Attached to the outside of the frame at the sway bar. Used original bottle. Easy to remove for cleaning, keeps the mess where you can wash when needed and not in the radiator or on the engine. Costs about $2.50. Best money I have every spent. Try it you'll like it
Got the idea from Gary's "Put a sock in it" thread ;D Bet ya thought nobody remembered 8)

THANKS for the comment! ;D ;D ;D
Sometime I do and post these little bits of info, and don't get much response - sorta makes me wonder if my ideas fit in with the interests of the "mainstream" truck owners...
Always a pleasure to hear from someone who's tried it and it worked out well for them too!

That sounds pretty normal, just letting the big dog breath thats all. I too got tired of the mess, and always wipeing it off ( yes I know, I'm ate up. But I acually enjoy getting under there and cleaning the bottom of the truck), so I simply got some 3/4" pvc hose and extended it back along the frame so it exits just alittle before the cab ends. Also used a 3/4" pvc 90 to do the turn down. Works great, doesn't spit all over the engine, trans, transfer case. Plus it fun, people are always asking whats that?

Commatoze Yes same here I moved the bottle to the trash and put on 4' 3/4 black heater tube. The first time I saw all the smoke I did think I had a problem. But I did find out the same. All is OK.
