Fuel Tank Removal - Cleaning

I've got "crap" in the tank. I was told by Central Motive Power, Inc. that I should drop the tank, empty it out, and clean out the crap. I dropped the tank a few months ago, and had no luck in actually getting the lid off. Any ideas on how to get that lid off? I took a big pair of channel-locks, and still had no luck. Its on really tight, because I can see the dealer put an in-tank LP at some point before I bought the truck.

Also, once the tank is down and the lid off - how do I go about "cleaning" the tank?

Any advice is much appreciated!!

Use a strap wrench or a chain wrench. Once you get the lid off the opening is pretty big.

I used a Harbor Freight strap wrench also.

I used a chisel and hammer. You have to be careful not to break anything though. I would be better to just use a strap wrench.
