Unhappy Fuel Sender

I installed a new fuel sender in my 98 CTD last night. The new unit reads full on the gauge now. I know there is only about 1/4 of a tank of fuel in the tank when I took off the tank. I have checked all the elec. connections. Does nay one have any ideas what to look for now?

You might want to check your wiring for a short or bad ground lead. I'm not sure in which direction the needle goes with high or low resistance? But it any case if your sender has a dirty connection, open lead or shorted lead it will cause the gauge to show different extremes.

I have sprayed the plug and the connector with some contact cleaner and it did not make any difference. Last night I filled the tank with fuel and now the gauge reads E and the low fuel light is on. I was going to see if it works backwards, and maybe if t
that is the case I will drop the tank and turn the wires on the sender around.

I pulled my sending unit because it was doing weird things, similar to your. I pulled off the float while I was cleaning/tweaking the sending unit. When I reinstalled the float I did it backwards and caused it to read full all the time. I ended up buying a new sending unit because I did n't know what I had screwed up, until I pulled it apart to put the sending unit in.
Did you have your float off?

I did not have the float off. I took the tank back off and everything looks alright,, so I turned the wiers around on the sender. Now when I filled the tank it read E for about 75 miles then the gauge went to F and it just stays there. I might take the tank off one more time and do the spring fix that they are talking about.
