Fuel gauge Shenanigans

(my new truck---Yaayy!)

My 98 ctd came with this little blip...

Every so often, the fuel gauge flips down to empty and the
yellow fuel gauge light comes on and the alarm dings.

This lasts for a few seconds, then the fuel gauge goes back to normal.

Doesn't seem related to anything in particular.
Happens no matter how full or empty the tank is,
freeway driving or around town...

Not a major problem, just irritating...what gives?

Typical bad sending unit on the fuel module in the tank so yes you have to drop the tank to fix it or you can leave it alone as many do and just reset your trip odometer when you fill up.

I'd suspect a broken wire from the sending unit myself. Turn the key on, and work the harness back and forth and see if you can get it to do it. Once you find the place that keeps setting it off, then just resolder the wire. Thats how I fixed me broken wire on my rear ABS sensor.

Some guys thought using the high volume pumps (for big rigs) to fill up were causing the float to get jounced around pretty good and caused erratic fuel gauge readings. If you get it fixed and use the high volume pump, don't use the high volume pump anymore. Just a thought.

Barngal, How did the trip go? Any details, pix, or did I miss a post somewhere?
Kirtaing, I use a truck island to refuel with the big hose. So far no problems, but thanks for the information. I try to fill at 1/2 tank around here.

Thanks for thinking of my dssimeck.

The trip went great, I posted when I got home in Road Trip thread on this forum.

I have pics to post...Need to explore where to post them, and I"ll get it done.

Love my truck, but tonight my lights got extremely dim and the voltmeter
dropped just below the normal range.

Truck ran fine, haven't tried to restart it yet.
Has 2 Opima Red batteries, which have been there for several years...I'll get them checked out, and the alternator, but have been reading threads on that and will clean the terminals, etc.

Will check the wiring for the gas gauge, starting at the tank..hope its that simple!
